In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is designed to support UN Women in a project focused on addressing inequalities between women and girls through quantitative data analysis. The selected volunteer will work under the guidance of the Statistics Specialist and will be integral to the project team. The primary functions of this role include discussing and consolidating indicators and datasets necessary for the analysis, developing research questions, defining methods and tools for analysis, suggesting indicators and a tabulation plan, conducting the actual data analysis, and identifying relevant trends, patterns, and key findings. The volunteer will also be responsible for developing a comprehensive report that adheres to the agreed reporting plan, which will include both visualizations and narrative interpretations of the findings. Regular communication and updates on progress will be required during weekly calls, ensuring that the project remains on track and that any challenges are addressed promptly.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Discuss and consolidate indicators and datasets for the analysis exercise.
  • Develop research questions and define methods and tools for the analysis.
  • Suggest indicators and a tabulation plan to conduct the analysis effectively.
  • Conduct analysis of data to identify relevant trends, patterns, and key findings.
  • Develop a report according to the agreed reporting plan, including visualizations and narrative interpretations of findings as required.
  • Update the project team on progress during regular weekly calls, ensuring effective communication and collaboration throughout the project duration.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong analytical skills, particularly in quantitative data analysis. Familiarity with statistical software and data visualization tools is essential. The candidate should also have a good understanding of gender issues and the context of inequalities faced by women and girls. Strong communication skills are necessary for effective collaboration with the project team and for presenting findings clearly in reports. Additionally, the candidate should be self-motivated, able to work independently, and manage their time effectively to meet project deadlines.

Educational Background:
A background in statistics, social sciences, gender studies, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should ideally have completed or be in the process of completing a degree in one of these areas, as this will provide the necessary theoretical foundation for conducting data analysis and understanding the context of gender equality.

Experience:
While prior experience in data analysis is preferred, it is not strictly required. Candidates with relevant academic projects or internships that involved quantitative analysis will be considered. The ability to demonstrate analytical thinking and problem-solving skills will be beneficial for applicants.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communications and reporting will be conducted in English. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the regions being studied, would be considered an asset but is not required.

This is a remote volunteer position, and the duration of the contract is not specified. The role is part-time, allowing for flexibility in hours worked.
