Morobe Development Foundation Inc. (MDF) is a prominent NGO based in Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Job Overview:
The Morobe Development Foundation (MDF) is seeking four skilled graphic designers to engage in multidisciplinary creative projects aimed at enhancing community engagement and conservation efforts in Papua New Guinea. The designers will be responsible for transforming complex datasets and research findings into visually compelling graphics that communicate critical insights to both scientific and public audiences. This role emphasizes the integration of advanced technologies and creative design practices, aligning with MDF’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in climate action and life on land. Designers will work closely with MDF’s task supervisor, receiving curated data and research materials to create accessible graphics that illustrate environmental and social issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The graphic designers will undertake various tasks, including:
  • Data Visualization and Infographics: Develop creative visualization concepts that translate complex research findings into clear, engaging graphics. Create initial sketches, mockups, and infographics that represent ecological, social, and scientific data in visually accessible formats while ensuring accuracy and creativity.
  • Environmental Graphics and Mapping: Design high-quality graphics that highlight environmental datasets, including canopy height mapping and ecosystem features, using professional design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and GIS-based visualization software.
  • Research-Based Visual Narratives: Transform drone imagery, survey data, and interdisciplinary findings into cohesive visual stories, generating mosaics, composite visuals, and thematic illustrations that communicate key insights about conservation and sustainability.
  • Quality Assurance and Integration: Oversee the refinement and integration of all graphics into final reports and communication materials, conducting thorough reviews to ensure consistency in style and accuracy, aligning visuals with accompanying text, and guaranteeing that outputs meet professional standards.
  • Collaborative Effort: Work collaboratively with other volunteers to ensure coherence and impact across the project’s visual outputs, including reviewing graphics for accuracy, enhancing design quality, and incorporating feedback to achieve a unified visual identity.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong graphic design skills, proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop), and experience with GIS-based visualization tools. A solid understanding of data visualization principles and the ability to translate complex information into engaging graphics is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Experience in environmental or community development projects is a plus, as is familiarity with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Educational Background:
A degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant certifications or coursework in data visualization, environmental studies, or community development will also be considered. A strong portfolio showcasing previous design work, particularly in data visualization or environmental graphics, is highly desirable.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in graphic design, with a focus on data visualization and environmental graphics. Experience working on multidisciplinary projects or in non-profit organizations is advantageous. Familiarity with community engagement initiatives and sustainable development practices will be beneficial for this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communication and documentation will be conducted in English. Knowledge of Tok Pisin or other local languages is considered a plus, as it may enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders.
