Job Overview:
The Research Analyst position within the Development Strategies and Governance Unit (DSG) at IFPRI is a critical role that supports the Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Policy Support Program (PNG-AFNP) in Papua New Guinea. The successful candidates will engage in a variety of research activities aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and food security in the region. This role requires a strong analytical mindset and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. The Research Analysts will be responsible for conducting quantitative data analysis, preparing research papers, and assisting in field survey activities, all of which contribute to the overarching goals of the PNG-AFNP program. The position is full-time and offers a one-year renewable contract, emphasizing the importance of research in informing policy decisions and improving livelihoods in Papua New Guinea.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Research Analyst include, but are not limited to: assisting in the preparation of working papers and discussion papers; developing data documentation manuals; handling household survey data, including survey design and sampling; training survey enumerators and supervising field surveys; developing research instruments and analytical tools; processing and cleaning survey data; conducting statistical and econometric analysis; performing literature reviews and synthesizing findings; preparing large datasets for public access; responding to internal and external data requests; and undertaking other duties as assigned by supervisors. This comprehensive set of responsibilities ensures that the Research Analysts contribute effectively to the research objectives of IFPRI and the PNG-AFNP program.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, International Development, or a relevant discipline, along with two years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a Master’s degree in any of the aforementioned fields is acceptable. Essential skills include the ability to perform quantitative data analysis, excellent drafting and analytical skills, and a demonstrated capacity for in-depth statistical analysis. Candidates should also have experience in conducting literature reviews and possess strong interpersonal skills to thrive in a multi-cultural team environment. The ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail is crucial for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Economics, Agricultural Economics, or International Development. A Master’s degree in these areas is preferred and may substitute for professional experience. This educational foundation is essential for understanding complex economic and agricultural issues and for conducting rigorous research that informs policy decisions.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have at least two years of relevant professional experience in research or a related field. This experience should demonstrate the ability to conduct quantitative data analysis, manage research projects, and work collaboratively in a team setting. Familiarity with agricultural policy and development issues, particularly in the context of Papua New Guinea, is highly advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is vital for drafting reports and collaborating with team members. Proficiency in Tok Pisin is preferred, as it enhances the ability to engage with local communities and stakeholders in Papua New Guinea.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time role with a one-year renewable contract based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Candidates must have work authorization to work in the country. The role may require travel within Papua New Guinea for field surveys and data collection. The work environment involves sitting for extended periods and may require lifting light weights.
