Job Overview: The security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Field Security Associate plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel in the assigned country or region. Under the guidance of the Chief Security Adviser (CSA) or Deputy Chiefadvisor" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Advisor (DCSA), the associate is responsible for implementing security information management and addressing all matters related to the safety and security of UN staff. This position requires a proactive approach to monitoring the security situation, maintaining security plans, and providing training on security awareness. The associate will assist in reporting security incidents, ensuring compliance with Minimum Operational Security Standards (MOSS), and maintaining key security documentation. The role demands strong communication skills, the ability to analyze security threats, and the capacity to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to enhance the security environment for UN operations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Field Security Associate's duties include assisting the CSA in collecting, updating, and communicating information regarding the security situation in the country or region of assignment. This involves maintaining the Security Plan, updating staff lists, and supporting the CSA in assessing MOSS for the duty station. The associate will report security incidents affecting UN staff, offices, and assets, and organize training courses on security awareness and preparedness. Additionally, the associate will provide general administrative assistance to the CSA, maintain key security documentation, prepare and deliver security briefings, and assist with administrative tasks related to Security Cell meetings. The role requires monitoring UN internal sources, local and international media, and other open sources to maintain security awareness and provide timely updates to relevant stakeholders. The associate will also assist in preparing security analyses and assessments, ensuring effective communication of security information to heads of UN agencies, and maintaining regular contact with Security Focal Points and UNDSS staff in the field.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of a High School Certificate or a first-level university degree (Bachelor) in Political Science, Military Studies, Social Studies, Management, Business, Public Administration, or a related field. Formal training in security risk management is considered an asset, particularly if the candidate is FSA/LSA certified. The position requires a strong understanding of security management principles and practices, as well as the ability to develop effective strategies and plans in line with UNDSS objectives. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in risk management and possess the ability to provide authoritative advice and guidance on security matters.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes at least a High School Certificate. However, candidates with a first-level university degree (Bachelor) in relevant fields such as Political Science, Military Studies, Social Studies, Management, Business, or Public Administration will be preferred. Additional formal training in security risk management is advantageous and may enhance a candidate's suitability for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in security if they hold a High School Certificate, or at least 3 years of experience if they possess a Bachelor's degree. Experience in security roles, particularly within military or police contexts, is essential. Prior experience with the UN system or international NGOs is desirable, as is knowledge of HF and VHF radio operations. Experience in diplomatic security, protection, and intelligence is considered an asset, along with familiarity with host country safety codes. A valid driver's license and the ability to travel are also required.
Languages: Proficiency in Arabic and English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, as they will be required to interact with diverse stakeholders and produce security reports and briefings in these languages. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This position is a fixed-term appointment with a probationary period for new UNDP staff members. The continuation of the appointment beyond the initial 12 months is contingent upon successful completion of this probation.
