Job Overview: The Accessibility Associate will play a vital role in supporting UNDP's initiatives aimed at promoting security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">human security in Ukraine, particularly in the aftermath of the ongoing war. This position involves providing technical guidance on accessibility standards and universal design to various stakeholders, including implementing partners and local authorities. The Accessibility Associate will be responsible for designing and delivering training sessions, developing knowledge products, and conducting assessments to ensure compliance with accessibility requirements. The role is crucial in facilitating the integration of accessibility measures into recovery efforts, thereby enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by the war, including persons with disabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Accessibility Associate will undertake a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: designing, preparing, and delivering training sessions on accessibility standards and universal design; developing training materials, presentations, and case studies; supporting partners in improving their accessibility measures in accordance with the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy and other relevant regulations; conducting assessments of buildings and public spaces to evaluate compliance with accessibility standards; providing architectural and technical advice on accessible design; reviewing architectural plans to ensure integration of accessibility features; reviewing communication and project materials for accessibility compliance; documenting good practices and lessons learned; contributing to knowledge-sharing events and workshops; participating in field visits as necessary; and performing any other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Accessibility Associate position should possess a strong understanding of accessibility standards and universal design principles. They should have experience in conducting accessibility assessments and providing technical guidance on inclusive design. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. A proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to promoting inclusivity and human rights are essential for this role.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in architecture, urban planning, social sciences, or a related field is required for the Accessibility Associate position. Advanced degrees or certifications in accessibility, universal design, or disability studies would be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of international accessibility standards and regulations, as well as familiarity with the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least 3-5 years of professional experience in accessibility consulting, urban planning, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or non-profit organizations focused on disability rights and inclusion is highly desirable. Proven experience in training delivery and capacity building is also essential for this position.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in Ukrainian or Russian is highly desirable. Knowledge of additional languages would be considered an asset, particularly in the context of working with diverse communities in Ukraine.
Additional Notes: This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the selected candidate will be responsible for organizing their own accommodation. The contract duration is specified in the vacancy announcement, with the possibility of extensions based on funding availability and performance. This is a full-time role, and the volunteer will receive a monthly living allowance of USD 1270 to cover housing and living expenses, along with a one-time entry lump sum of USD 40
Medical and life insurance coverage will be provided for the duration of the assignment, and the volunteer will accrue annual leave and sick leave entitlements as outlined in the UN Volunteer Conditions of Service.
