Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The job posting organization is the Joint Office (JO) of the Ex-Com agencies in Cabo Verde, which includes UNDP, UNICEF, and UNFPA. Established on January 1, 2006, the JO was created as part of the UN reform initiative aimed at harmonizing and simplifying UN operations in smaller countries. The JO operates under a unified organizational structure, allowing for a single program that encompasses the activities and mandates of all participating agencies. This model promotes efficiency and collaboration among the agencies, which have collectively worked towards the development goals of Cabo Verde since its graduation to a Middle-Income Country in 200
  • The JO has adapted its operations following the discontinuation of the WFP Office in Cabo Verde in 2010, focusing on the remaining three agencies.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is designed to enhance the communication and visibility efforts of the Joint Office by providing essential graphic design support. The volunteer will work closely with the Communication Analyst to create visually appealing materials that effectively communicate the JO's results and initiatives to various stakeholders, including partners and the public. The role emphasizes creativity and professionalism in presenting information, particularly through the design of the semi-annual newsletter and other communication materials for social media and different platforms. This position is ideal for individuals looking to gain experience in graphic design within an international development context, while also contributing to the mission of the UN agencies in Cabo Verde.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Online Volunteer include:
  • Designing the layout of the Joint Office’s semi-annual newsletter, incorporating texts and images provided by the Communications Analyst.
  • Creating visual elements and graphics that support various communication materials intended for social media and other platforms.
  • Collaborating with the Communication Analyst to ensure that all designs align with the JO's branding and messaging strategies.
  • Assisting in the development of promotional materials that highlight the JO's achievements and initiatives.
  • Providing feedback and suggestions for improving the visual communication strategies of the Joint Office.
  • Meeting deadlines and managing multiple design projects simultaneously while maintaining high-quality standards.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess the following qualifications:
  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of design principles, typography, and color theory.
  • Ability to create visually compelling layouts and graphics that effectively communicate messages.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and their specific design requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with the team.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn and adapt to the needs of the Joint Office.

Educational Background:
A background in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should ideally have completed or be pursuing a degree in design, communications, or a similar discipline. Relevant coursework or certifications in graphic design will be considered an asset.

Experience:
While prior experience in graphic design is beneficial, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should demonstrate a portfolio of previous design work or projects that showcase their skills and creativity. Experience working in a volunteer capacity or within an international organization may be advantageous but is not mandatory.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communication and materials will be produced in this language. Proficiency in Portuguese is a plus, given the local context of Cabo Verde and the potential need to communicate with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. The role is expected to be part-time, allowing flexibility for the volunteer to manage their time effectively. The duration of the volunteer engagement is not specified, but it is likely to align with the production schedule of the semi-annual newsletter and other communication initiatives. The position is open to both local and international candidates, reflecting the inclusive nature of the Joint Office's operations.
