Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The ICT and Development Section (IDS) operates under the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The mission of ESCAP is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region. Established in 1947, ESCAP has been working for over 75 years to foster regional cooperation and integration. The organization employs a diverse workforce and operates in multiple countries across the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on various development agendas, including digital transformation and disaster risk reduction.

Job Overview:
The internship at the ICT and Development Section is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) and its application for sustainable development. Interns will work full-time for a duration ranging from two to six months, contributing to the Section's efforts to bridge the digital divide and enhance digital transformation in the Asia-Pacific region. Interns will be supervised by a staff member and will engage in a variety of tasks that align with their academic background and the Section's objectives. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in research, data analysis, project support, and event organization within a United Nations context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a range of duties that may include: assisting officers in conducting analytical research on ICT and digital agendas for sustainable development; compiling, processing, and analyzing information and data related to ICT for development in the Asia-Pacific region; supporting the implementation of programs and projects related to ICT and digital data for member States; managing and updating the Section's website; organizing inter-governmental meetings and regional workshops, which may involve drafting concept notes, contacting participants, and developing draft programs; and carrying out other substantive and administrative tasks as required by the Chief of the Section and the Division. The internship provides a comprehensive exposure to the workings of the United Nations and the specific challenges and opportunities in the field of ICT for development.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). While significant work experience is not required for the internship, applicants should demonstrate ICT literacy in standard software applications, including statistical software such as Stata. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Additionally, candidates should possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes either enrollment in or completion of a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree program. This educational foundation is crucial as it equips interns with the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to contribute effectively to the Section's work on ICT and digital development.

Experience:
The internship does not require significant prior work experience. However, candidates should demonstrate familiarity with ICT tools and applications, as well as a strong interest in the United Nations' mission and activities. This position is particularly suited for students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in a professional setting, especially in the context of international development and digital transformation.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Chinese, or Russian, is considered an asset. This multilingual capability is important as it facilitates communication and collaboration within the diverse environment of the United Nations.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week, totaling 35 hours per week. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Those who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer. Additionally, the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
