In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Senior Adviser for the UN Women Leaders Network will play a pivotal role in leading and overseeing the UN Women Leaders Network, which aims to enhance UN Women's positioning in the area of women's leadership. This position will involve working closely with the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Executive Director and the Office of the Executive Director to mobilize a network of 100 intergenerational women leaders from various sectors. The Senior Adviser will be responsible for ensuring that the network's activities align with UN Women's Strategic Plan 2026-2029 and will focus on facilitating partnerships with other organizations to advance women's leadership. The role requires high-level representation and thought leadership, ensuring that the needs of women in least developed countries and fragile settings are reflected in global discussions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Adviser will lead the strategy and positioning of the UN Women Leaders Network, ensuring alignment with UN Women's mission. Responsibilities include overseeing outreach efforts to create and maintain partnerships with existing women leaders' networks, advising the Executive Director on their role as Chair of the Network, and enhancing UN Women's visibility in global discussions on women's leadership. The Senior Adviser will also develop and manage strategic partnerships, oversee knowledge management, and support the Executive Director with policy briefs and reports related to women's leadership. The role involves organizing regular convenings and advocacy initiatives to amplify women's leadership and ensure that the network engages in meaningful advocacy efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least 15 years of progressively responsible experience advocating for women's leadership, with demonstrable results in this area. Leadership experience in senior positions within public or private sectors is required, along with experience in establishing and managing networks and partnerships with governments, donors, and civil society organizations. Familiarity with the UN system is desirable, and candidates should have excellent networking skills and the ability to perform qualitative and quantitative policy research.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or equivalent in political affairs, international relations, social sciences, or related fields is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires extensive experience, specifically at least 15 years in advocating for women's leadership, with a strong track record of achieving concrete results. Candidates should have held senior leadership roles and have experience in managing networks and partnerships at both national and international levels.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered desirable.
