Job Overview:
The position of Project Coordinator – Geopark Management and Protected Areas is part of the 'Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Mongolia through UNESCO Cultural and Geo Heritage' project, which is a three-year initiative running from 2023 to 202
  • This project is implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, specifically through its Ulaanbaatar Antenna Office, with support from Rio Tinto Mongolia. The primary objective of the project is to aid Mongolia's recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 by promoting sustainable tourism that leverages the country's unique cultural and geo-heritage resources. As the project approaches its final year, the coordinator will be responsible for achieving significant milestones, including the establishment of Mongolia's first aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark or a designated Mongolian National Geopark. This role requires the development of an operational management framework, governance structure, and a sustainable financial plan to ensure the long-term viability of the Geopark. The coordinator will provide senior technical and operational leadership to ensure that these objectives are met by July 2026, ahead of the COP17 conference scheduled for August 2026 in Ulaanbaatar.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Coordinator will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Leading the project implementation by coordinating activities related to the establishment of the Geopark, ensuring alignment with UNESCO's standards and guidelines.
  • Developing and managing the operational management framework for the Geopark, including governance structures and stakeholder engagement strategies.
  • Collaborating with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable tourism practices that benefit both the environment and local economies.
  • Overseeing the financial planning and resource mobilization efforts to secure funding for the Geopark's long-term sustainability.
  • Monitoring and evaluating project progress, preparing reports, and presenting findings to UNESCO and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitating capacity-building workshops and training sessions for local stakeholders to enhance their understanding of geopark management and sustainable tourism.
  • Ensuring compliance with UNESCO's policies and procedures throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Representing UNESCO at national and international meetings, conferences, and events related to sustainable tourism and geo-heritage.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong set of qualifications, including:
  • Proven experience in project management, particularly in the fields of sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, or cultural heritage.
  • Strong understanding of geopark management principles and practices, as well as knowledge of UNESCO's operational frameworks.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on achieving project objectives and outcomes.
  • Proficiency in project monitoring and evaluation methodologies, including the ability to develop and implement effective evaluation frameworks.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position. Candidates should have at least a Master's degree in a field related to natural sciences, environmental management, cultural heritage, or sustainable tourism. Additional certifications or training in project management or geopark management would be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in project management, with a focus on sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, or cultural heritage. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of UNESCO projects, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the Mongolian context and local communities will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and documentation will be conducted in English. Proficiency in Mongolian or other relevant local languages is highly desirable and will be considered an advantage, as it will facilitate better engagement with local stakeholders and communities.
