Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics and operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe, representing more than 100 nationalities. The organization is dedicated to understanding the fundamental structure of the universe and operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, with its headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland.

Job Overview:
As a Technical Infrastructure Control Room Operator at CERN, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the operational integrity of the particle accelerator chain and various advanced scientific experiments. This position requires you to be part of a dedicated 24/7 shift crew in the Control Centre, where you will monitor and operate large-scale technical systems that are essential for the functioning of CERN's facilities and accelerators. Your responsibilities will include overseeing systems such as the 400 kV high-voltage network, 48 V safety systems, cooling and ventilation plants, and IT infrastructure. You will be tasked with ensuring these systems operate smoothly and responding promptly to any issues that arise. Your decisions will directly impact the uninterrupted production of particle beams and the success of significant physics experiments. In the event of major technical incidents, you will coordinate the initial response, collaborating closely with experts and adhering to CERN's operational priorities. This role offers a unique opportunity to blend operational excellence with contributions to cutting-edge scientific research.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Technical Infrastructure Control Room Operator include: monitoring and operating diverse systems through an integrated control platform, consolidating alarms from various systems including cooling, ventilation, electrical distribution, access control, IT, and safety systems; utilizing specialized and general SCADA systems for remote diagnostics and operation of infrastructure installations; logging incidents, generating and updating work orders, and producing event reports for maintenance teams; coordinating with physicists, users, and maintenance staff to share incident information and organize interventions; contributing to the development of new procedures, tools, and processes aimed at enhancing system performance and operational reliability.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Higher Technical Diploma or equivalent relevant experience in fields such as Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electromechanics, Heating, Cooling, and Ventilation (HVAC), Industrial Maintenance and Automation, Instrumentation and Control Systems, Industrial Electronics, Process Control, or a related area. Practical experience in a control room environment or in the maintenance of complex technical systems is highly relevant, and candidates with strong expertise in at least one area are encouraged to apply. Hands-on experience in domains such as electrical power systems, electromechanics, HVAC, industrial maintenance and automation, instrumentation, or control systems is valuable. Experience with industrial-scale infrastructure and the ability to respond quickly and effectively to technical incidents is considered a major asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Higher Technical Diploma or equivalent in relevant fields such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related disciplines. Candidates should have a solid understanding of technical systems and infrastructure relevant to the role.

Experience:
The position requires practical experience in a control room environment or in the maintenance of complex technical systems. Candidates should have hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas: electrical power systems, electromechanics, HVAC, industrial maintenance and automation, instrumentation, or control systems. Experience with industrial-scale infrastructure and the ability to respond effectively to technical incidents is essential.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is crucial for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.
