European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. It employs over 2,500 staff members and has a diverse workforce from more than 100 nationalities. CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is known for its groundbreaking research in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to explore the fundamental structure of the universe. The organization is committed to diversity and inclusion, recognizing that a diverse workforce is essential for its success and innovation.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Engineer position within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (EN-MME) group at CERN involves overseeing the construction, planning, maintenance, and upgrade of the FCC-ee arc half-cell mock-up. This mock-up is crucial for testing various aspects related to installation, transport, safety, alignment, and stability of the FCC-ee, a proposed lepton circular collider with a circumference of approximately 90 km. The role requires the engineer to perform engineering calculations, including static structural, modal, and vibrational mechanical analyses, which will constitute about 50% of the workload. The remaining time will be dedicated to coordinating in-situ activities, such as maintenance and upgrade interventions, testing campaigns, and project meetings. The engineer will actively contribute to the project by preparing reports and technical documentation, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with various teams involved in the FCC-ee Pre-TDR study.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct engineering calculations for the safe operation and upgrade of the FCC-ee arc half-cell mock-up, focusing on static structural, modal, and vibrational analyses.
Perform thermal analyses to assess the response of short-straight section elements to thermal loads.
Coordinate and manage on-site activities, including maintenance and upgrade interventions, ensuring adherence to safety and operational standards.
Participate in regular project meetings, presenting findings and contributing to project advancement.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective integration of engineering solutions.
Prepare detailed reports and technical notes documenting work progress and results.
Maintain effective communication with stakeholders and team members to facilitate project success.
Adapt to evolving project priorities and demonstrate flexibility in task management.
Required Qualifications:
Proficiency in finite element analysis software for thermal and structural simulations (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
Understanding of design principles for ductile and brittle materials.
Initial experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., CATIA) is preferred.
Familiarity with International Standards related to structural and pressure equipment design and safety (e.g., Eurocode, EN-13445) is an asset.
Willingness to participate in the definition, planning, and follow-up of on-site activities.
Ability to coordinate and manage weekly meetings, including tracking minutes and actions.
Strong teamwork attitude in a multidisciplinary environment.
Excellent communication and documentation skills in English, with a commitment to learn French.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles and practices, enabling the candidate to perform the required engineering calculations and analyses effectively.
Experience: Applicants should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This experience should ideally include practical applications of engineering principles in a relevant setting, demonstrating the ability to contribute effectively to the responsibilities outlined in the job description.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, as it will be beneficial for communication within the organization and with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The position is a full-time role with a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week. The target start date for this position is March 1, 202
A valid driving license is required for this role. The job reference for this position is EN-MME-EDS-2025-251-GRAE. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), comprehensive health coverage for the employee and their family, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and opportunities for on-the-job training and formal training at CERN.
