In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Security and Safety intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Communications Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Security and Safety Services team at UN Women Headquarters in New York. This full-time internship is designed to enhance the intern's understanding of the UN's operations while focusing on gender equality. The intern will assist in the identification, coordination, and educational development of strategic communication outputs within UN Women and the wider UN Security Management System. The position will leverage the previously developed Strategic Communications Plan to identify tangible deliverables and develop an implementation strategy that includes various communications products aimed at increasing security and safety awareness among UN Women personnel. The intern will work closely with various units and divisions, as well as external partners, to create effective communication materials that are gender-sensitive and promote a culture of safety and security across the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for supporting the communication efforts of the UN Security Management System as part of the UN Women Security and Safety Services Team. Key responsibilities include: liaising with appropriate internal units, divisions, and sections; collaborating with the UN Department of Safety and Security and UNSMS partners to develop robust security and safety communications products; creating gender-sensitive security information and communication materials; developing communication campaigns and establishing coordinated channels of communication; creating effective presentations focused on visually accessible communications; utilizing design tools to produce communication products such as flyers, presentations, graphics, videos, and multimedia materials; participating in the Inter-Agency Security Management System Strategic Communications Working Group; and liaising with interested parties regarding educational materials.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have university studies in disciplines such as security risk management, criminal justice systems, security information management, international relations, media/communications, or other relevant subjects. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program (master’s or higher); be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (bachelor’s or equivalent); be enrolled in a mandatory national service program that includes the internship; or have recently graduated with a university degree and must start the internship within two years of graduation.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to have a background in relevant fields such as security risk management, criminal justice systems, security information management, international relations, or media/communications. Candidates should either be enrolled in a postgraduate program or be in their final year of undergraduate studies, or have recently graduated with a relevant degree.

Experience:
The internship is designed for individuals who are either currently enrolled in a relevant academic program or have recently graduated. While specific prior work experience is not mandatory, a demonstrated interest in security risk management and communications is essential. The intern should be prepared to work in a multicultural environment and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UN. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to UN operations, would be considered an asset but is not required.
