European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a renowned scientific research organization established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries, making it a hub for international collaboration in scientific research. The organization operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory and is home to the Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful particle accelerator ever built. CERN's mission is to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe by studying the basic constituents of matter and the forces that govern their interactions.
Job Overview: The Electrical Engineer position at CERN plays a crucial role in the expansion, strengthening, and maintenance of signal and power cable installations that serve various systems within the CERN accelerators, particularly in radiation-exposed areas. The engineer will conduct comprehensive studies and detailed designs for signal cabling, focusing on optimizing strategies to minimize radiation exposure while enhancing cable reliability and lifespan. This role requires collaboration with users to define cable types, connector assemblies, and routing, taking into account the unique constraints of the installation environment. The engineer will also assess cable system aging through sample analysis and evaluate operating environments to ensure the longevity and safety of the installations. A significant aspect of the job involves defining a replacement strategy for radiation-damaged cables based on their conditions and the total integrated dose they have received. The engineer will propose and implement cabling execution strategies that prioritize worker safety during installation activities, adhering to the principle of keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable. Additionally, the role includes drafting technical specifications for cables and connectors, participating in the tendering process, and managing industrial supply contracts. The engineer will lead projects related to the extension, replacement, or dismantling of electrical cable systems, ensuring that all tasks are completed on time and within budget. The position also requires the preparation of technical reports, engineering documentation, and presentations, including progress reports and project reviews, to maintain transparency and clarity in communication with stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct studies to define cable types, connector assemblies, and routing in collaboration with users, considering installation environment constraints such as radiation exposure.
Assess and report on cable system aging through sample analysis and evaluation of operating environments.
Define a radiation-damaged cable replacement strategy based on cable conditions and total integrated dose.
Propose, develop, and implement a cabling execution strategy to reduce radiation exposure for workers during cabling activities.
Draw up technical specifications for cables and connectors and participate in the tendering process.
Manage industrial supply contracts related to cable systems.
Lead projects for the extension, replacement, or dismantling of electrical cable systems, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget.
Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and presentations, including progress reports and project reviews.
Ensure the preparation of detailed work documentation for contractors, ensuring clarity and compliance with standards for electrical system installations.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
Proven experience with signal and power cables, including their connectors.
Demonstrated experience in supervising cabling installations, including preparation of work files, on-site supervision, and acceptance of electrical cabling projects.
Experience in designing cable systems for radiation-exposed areas and understanding of related materials.
Experience in contract tendering, including drafting technical specifications and evaluating proposals.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, particularly as they relate to cable systems and radiation exposure.
Experience: Candidates should have proven experience in the field of electrical engineering, specifically with signal and power cables and their connectors. Experience in supervising cabling installations is essential, including the preparation of work files, on-site supervision, and acceptance of electrical cabling projects. Additionally, candidates should have experience in designing cable systems for radiation-exposed areas and a solid understanding of the materials involved. Familiarity with contract tendering processes, including drafting technical specifications and evaluating proposals, is also required.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a valuable asset. Proficiency in French will enhance communication within the organization and with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility for holders of limited-duration contracts to apply for an indefinite position, subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role involves working in radiation areas and may require interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is necessary, and the position may require work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as shift work and stand-by duty when required by the organization's needs. The job grade is classified as 6-7.
