Job Overview: The position of Praktikant*in im Sektorvorhaben Stadt involves working within the sector project that advises the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on sustainable and climate-friendly urban development. The focus areas include municipal financing, urban planning, sustainable construction, and climate change in urban settings. Additionally, the role encompasses cross-cutting themes such as science, digitalization, and communication. A significant aspect of the internship will be supporting the BMZ's committee work with institutions like UN-Habitat, Cities Alliance, and the City Climate Gap Fund. The intern will also assist in preparing urban topics for public relations, organizing events, and supporting the BMZ in international conferences and political communication, with key conferences in the first half of 2026 including the World Urban Forum, Daring Cities, and the Hamburg Sustainability Conference.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will assist the team in various aspects of urban development, focusing on integrated urban planning, sustainable construction, municipal financing, and climate change in cities. Responsibilities include conducting research and providing ad-hoc advice to the BMZ on all topics related to the sector project, monitoring the environment by reviewing and evaluating relevant publications, preparing background papers and status reports on current issues, supporting the organization of a GIZ internal competition on a core urban theme, aiding in communication efforts, and co-organizing both in-person and virtual events. Additionally, the intern will handle organizational and administrative tasks to support daily operations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have successfully completed a basic degree (Bachelor's) in fields such as architecture, urban planning, regional sciences, administrative/political sciences, economics, or other relevant disciplines related to development policy or international relations. Relevant expertise in urban development, climate change in cities, or municipal financing is essential. A strong command of language and a passion for working with texts are also required. Previous work experience in development policy, international political processes, sustainable urban development, financing, or climate issues is advantageous. The ability to quickly grasp new concepts and work in a structured manner, along with strong organizational and coordination skills, is necessary. Teamwork and collaboration are also key attributes for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a completed Bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as architecture, urban planning, regional sciences, administrative or political sciences, economics, or other pertinent areas that relate to development policy or international relations. This foundational education is crucial for understanding the complexities of urban development and related themes.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have some initial work experience in areas such as development policy, international political processes, sustainable urban development, financing, or climate issues.
