Job Overview:
The Unit Head position is a leadership role within the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, specifically in the Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety. The Unit Head is responsible for developing and managing the IAEA's technical assistance and information management programs, ensuring that they align with the organization's mission and effectively address the needs of member states. This role requires a combination of program management, team leadership, and strategic planning to enhance the efficacy of the IAEA's global initiatives in radiation safety. The Unit Head will coordinate human and financial resources, oversee the implementation of policies and strategies, and engage with high-level regulators and stakeholders to promote the IAEA's vision in radiation safety. The position demands a proactive approach to capacity building and the ability to navigate complex multilateral environments while fostering collaboration among diverse partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Unit Head will manage the unit’s program, human resources, and budget, ensuring that all activities are aligned with the IAEA's strategic objectives. Key responsibilities include planning, organizing, managing, and evaluating the work of the team, continuously reviewing effectiveness, and focusing on priorities to drive excellence. The Unit Head will coordinate the development and implementation of the division’s policy and strategy for technical support to the Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP), utilizing the Radiation Safety Information Management System (RASIMS) to streamline technical support. Additionally, the Unit Head will maintain and improve the RASIMS platform, support the Section Head in radiation safety clearance processes, and contribute to capacity building initiatives through the development and management of training programs. The role also involves supervising education and training activities related to radiation, transport, and waste safety, as well as contributing to peer reviews and advisory services.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree or an advanced university degree in nuclear or physical sciences, engineering, or a related field. A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in radiation protection and safety is required, with at least 5 years in regulatory oversight or relevant governmental/international roles. Proven experience in managing multidisciplinary teams, budgets, and complex projects is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to lead capacity building initiatives and training programs, effectively engage with diverse stakeholders, and work in multicultural environments. Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory, while knowledge of IAEA peer review services and official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's Degree or an advanced university degree in nuclear or physical sciences, engineering, or a related field. This advanced education is crucial for understanding the complexities of radiation safety and regulatory frameworks, as well as for effectively managing technical assistance programs and engaging with high-level stakeholders in the field.

Experience:
The position requires at least 10 years of professional experience in radiation protection and safety, with a significant portion of that experience (minimum of 5 years) in regulatory oversight or relevant governmental/international roles. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing multidisciplinary teams and complex projects, demonstrating leadership in capacity building and training initiatives, and effectively navigating the challenges of working in international and multicultural environments.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, both in oral and written communication. Knowledge of additional IAEA official languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders and member states.

Additional Notes:
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $101,540, along with a variable post adjustment, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, and relocation and repatriation expenses. Employees are entitled to 6 weeks of annual leave, home leave travel, and benefits such as a pension plan and health insurance.
