Job Overview:
The Equipment Specialist position is critical within the Department of Safeguards at the IAEA, which is responsible for implementing safeguards to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The Equipment Specialist will lead complex projects focused on the development and evaluation of safeguards equipment and technologies. This role requires a blend of engineering expertise, technical knowledge, and project management skills to ensure that the IAEA has access to the latest tools necessary for its safeguards mandate. The Equipment Specialist will be responsible for identifying emerging technologies, assessing their suitability for safeguards use, and ensuring that the equipment meets stringent operational requirements. This position is vital for enhancing the effectiveness of safeguard operations globally and requires a proactive approach to technology integration and development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Equipment Specialist will lead and participate in the planning, development, and authorization of new safeguards equipment and technologies. Key responsibilities include evaluating commercial off-the-shelf and custom-designed products for compatibility with safeguards requirements, providing specialized expertise for procurement and implementation of equipment, and preparing quality-controlled technical documents such as evaluation reports and specifications. The role also involves liaising with R&D specialists in Member States, organizing vulnerability reviews of IAEA equipment systems, and providing expert support and training to teams within the organization. The incumbent must be prepared to work in environments involving exposure to radioactive materials and must comply with health and safety regulations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with a Master's degree preferred. A minimum of seven years of relevant working experience is required, particularly in areas related to the design, development, and implementation of safeguards equipment or systems. Experience in producing technical documentation and working with emerging technologies, containment/surveillance systems, and nuclear instrumentation is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of security-related considerations in technical projects and possess the ability to manage complex engineering tasks effectively.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear science, physics, applied physics, or a similar technical area. An advanced university degree is preferred, and candidates with a Bachelor's degree may be considered if they have two additional years of relevant working experience. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the technical complexities involved in the development and evaluation of safeguards equipment.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant working experience in fields related to safeguards equipment and technologies. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in project management, particularly in technical projects involving agile methodologies and systems engineering practices. Familiarity with formal project management principles, such as those outlined by PRINCE2 or PMI, is highly desirable. Experience in the design and implementation of systems that require security-related considerations is also essential.

Languages:
Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $86,027, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance.
