Job Overview:
The Data Engineer position is integral to the IAEA's data transformation agenda, which aims to modernize the agency's data infrastructure and governance. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer (CDO), the Data Engineer will work closely with the Data Architect, Platform Engineer, and various business stakeholders to support project-based assignments that focus on data engineering, analytics, and light artificial intelligence/machine learning (AIML) development. The role involves designing and maintaining scalable ELT/ETL pipelines in Snowflake, collaborating with stakeholders to create efficient data models, and implementing data quality frameworks to ensure the reliability of data throughout its lifecycle. The Data Engineer will also contribute to the development of dashboards and visualizations to communicate insights effectively to business users, thereby enhancing the agency's data platform capabilities and maximizing the strategic impact of its data assets.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable ELT/ETL pipelines in Snowflake to ingest, transform, and serve data from diverse internal and external sources as part of project-based data engineering work.
  • Collaborate with the Data Architect and business stakeholders to translate requirements into robust data models and efficient SQL transformations.
  • Implement data quality frameworks, perform data validation, and ensure reliability across the data lifecycle.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the Agency's Data Lakehouse architecture, including data ingestion, integration, and optimization.
  • Create and maintain documentation for data pipelines, lineage, and metadata to support governance and discoverability.
  • Develop dashboards and visualizations (Power BI, Tableau) to communicate insights to business users.
  • Contribute to data cataloguing, metadata management, and adherence to data governance frameworks.
  • Apply machine learning techniques to extract actionable insights from various data forms within project assignments.
  • Support CDO and business units to identify opportunities for predictive and prescriptive analytics. 1
  • Assist in building and deploying proof-of-concept ML models, with a focus on scalability and integration into data pipelines. 1
  • Contribute to the exploration of AI/ML use cases aligned with IAEA's strategic goals.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Computer Science, Data Management, Information Management, Data Analytics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, including internships, in one or more of the following areas is required: Data Management or Information Management, Data Science or Analytics, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML).

Educational Background:
A university degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Data Management, Information Management, Data Analytics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline is essential for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding complex data systems and methodologies.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, which can include internships, in areas such as Data Management, Information Management, Data Science, Analytics, Data Engineering, or AI/ML. This experience is crucial for the candidate to effectively contribute to the agency's data transformation initiatives and to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as the role requires excellent oral and written communication skills to convey technical findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, or Russian, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy offers a daily fee of up to a maximum of €170, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience. If duty travel is required as part of the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs will be provided. It is important to note that health coverage and pension fund responsibilities lie with the incumbent. This position may involve project-based assignments that require flexibility and adaptability to meet the agency's evolving data needs.
