Job Overview: The Unit Head (Integrated Nuclear Security Approaches) will oversee the coordination of the design and delivery of program activities related to nuclear security within the IAEA’s framework. This role involves managing a team and collaborating with nuclear security officers to prioritize and implement activities based on the needs identified by Member States. The Unit Head will also be responsible for developing and reviewing nuclear security guidance, conducting advisory services, and providing technical inputs for projects related to nuclear security. This position requires a strong understanding of nuclear security threats and the ability to interface safety and security measures effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Unit Head will coordinate IAEA activities related to nuclear security, develop work plans to support Member States, provide technical support for the implementation of the CPPNM and its Amendment, oversee the development of relevant guidance, and contribute to capacity building through training and workshops. Additionally, the Unit Head will analyze inputs from Integrated Nuclear Security Sustainability Plans (INSSPs) to plan future projects, represent the IAEA at national and international meetings, and manage the team’s performance to ensure alignment with the IAEA’s quality management approach. The role may involve exposure to radioactive materials, requiring medical clearance and adherence to safety regulations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in nuclear engineering, chemistry, physics, or a closely related field. A Bachelor's Degree with additional relevant experience may be considered. A minimum of seven years of relevant professional experience is required, including at least five years in a managerial capacity. Proven experience in nuclear security, particularly in threat assessment and physical protection, is essential. Experience in leading technical teams and working with national and international organizations is desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in nuclear engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field. A Bachelor's degree with additional relevant experience may suffice in lieu of an advanced degree. The emphasis is on candidates who have a strong academic foundation in nuclear-related disciplines, which is critical for understanding the complexities of nuclear security.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant professional experience, with at least five years in a managerial role. Candidates should have a proven track record in nuclear security, including experience in threat assessment and physical protection at nuclear facilities. Experience in leading teams and collaborating with international organizations is highly valued, as is familiarity with the challenges of implementing the IAEA's Nuclear Security Plan.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's profile.
