In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.
Job Description

The Government of Nepal has established a strong commitment to women's human rights through various normative frameworks, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the 2030 Agenda with its Sustainable Development Goals. UN Women, founded by General Assembly resolution 64/289 on July 2, 2010, aims to assist Member States and the UN system in achieving gender equality and women's empowerment. The organization operates globally, focusing on eliminating discrimination against women and girls, empowering women, and ensuring equality between genders. UN Women's priorities for 2018-2022 include strengthening global norms on gender equality, ensuring women's participation in governance, providing economic autonomy, and eliminating violence against women. UN Women plays a crucial role in supporting national priorities and building partnerships with various stakeholders to transform discriminatory social norms and fulfill Nepal's international obligations regarding gender equality.

Job Overview:
The National UN Volunteer Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist of the Gender Responsive Inclusive Governance (GRIG) Thematic Area. This role involves providing coordination and project management support, acting as the focal point for at least three programme partners, and liaising with key stakeholders to ensure effective project implementation and monitoring. The specialist will support the execution of projects, manage financial and programme systems, and assist in the preparation of reports for donors and partners. The position also requires reviewing concept notes and proposals, contributing to policy document reviews, and supporting resource mobilization efforts. The role emphasizes the importance of integrating volunteerism into the work and engaging with communities to promote voluntary action.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National UN Volunteer Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Providing coordination and project management support for a minimum of three programme partners.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders and agencies to ensure effective implementation and monitoring of projects.
  • Supporting the execution of projects by entering project functions into UN Women’s online systems, finalizing contribution agreements, and coordinating budget revisions.
  • Assisting in the preparation of bi-annual and annual reports, as well as donor reports.
  • Reviewing concept notes and proposals, and supporting the programme team in drafting documents related to women's leadership and political participation.
  • Contributing to the review of global and national policy documents related to governance and gender equality.
  • Engaging in activities that promote volunteerism and community engagement, including writing articles and participating in UNV events.
  • Managing project work plans, budgets, and proposals for programme implementation arrangements.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate integrity and professionalism, with a strong ability to apply good judgment and take ownership of their responsibilities. They should possess effective organizational and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to manage a large volume of work efficiently. A commitment to continuous learning and adaptability to changes in the work environment is essential. Candidates should also have proven interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and maintain harmonious working relationships in a diverse environment. Flexibility and the ability to operate independently in challenging conditions are also required.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position. Candidates should possess a degree in social sciences, gender studies, international relations, or a related field. Advanced degrees may be preferred, depending on the specific requirements of the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of two years of relevant experience in project management, gender equality, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of women's rights and empowerment, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN systems and procedures will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Nepali or other local languages is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.

Additional Notes:
This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, meaning the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. National UN Volunteers are covered under a malicious insurance plan. The position may involve extensive travel within the area of operations and requires a genuine commitment to the principles of voluntary engagement, including solidarity and compassion.
