In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Editor/Proofreader position at UN Women Uganda is crucial for enhancing the quality and clarity of communication materials produced by the organization. The role involves working closely with the Communications team to edit and proofread a variety of publication materials, including policy briefs, fact sheets, reports, and human-interest stories. The primary expectation is to ensure that all documents are grammatically correct, coherent, and accessible to diverse audiences. The Editor/Proofreader will also ensure that the materials align with UN Women’s editorial style and gender-sensitive language guidelines, thereby contributing to the overall mission of promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. This position is integral to maintaining the professional quality of publications that document progress, challenges, and lessons learned in the thematic areas of Ending Violence Against Women and Girls, Governance and Women’s Leadership, Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Women, Peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Editor/Proofreader will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including but not limited to: editing and proofreading draft publications for grammar, clarity, coherence, and readability; ensuring alignment with UN Women’s editorial style and gender-sensitive language guidelines; reviewing the structure and flow of documents to enhance storytelling and accessibility; conducting final proofreading of designed materials prior to publication or upload; and providing light editorial guidance to ensure consistency across all program materials. The deliverables for this role include professionally edited and proofread versions of five publication materials, tracked and clean versions of each document in both Word and PDF formats, and a short editorial feedback note summarizing improvements and recommendations made during the editing process.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Editor/Proofreader position should possess strong editing and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of grammar and style. Familiarity with gender-sensitive language and the ability to apply editorial guidelines consistently is essential. The ideal candidate should also have experience in editing materials related to gender equality, women's empowerment, or similar fields, demonstrating a commitment to the mission of UN Women. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team are also required.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field is required for this position. Advanced degrees or certifications in editing or proofreading would be an advantage, as would specialized training in gender studies or related disciplines that align with UN Women’s mission.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in editing and proofreading, preferably within the context of non-profit organizations, international development, or gender equality advocacy. Experience working with diverse teams and stakeholders, as well as familiarity with the UN system and its operations, would be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all editing and proofreading tasks will be conducted in English. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the regions where UN Women operates, would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader audience.
