Job Overview:
The position of National Biodiversity Financing Specialist is crucial for the UNDP's efforts in promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable financing mechanisms in the Republic of North Macedonia. The specialist will be responsible for developing strategies and frameworks that enhance financial resources for biodiversity initiatives. This role requires a deep understanding of biodiversity financing, including public and private funding sources, and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector. The specialist will also be expected to analyze existing financing mechanisms and propose innovative solutions to improve funding for biodiversity projects. The assignment period is from November 2025 to June 2026, and the specialist will work closely with UNDP teams and partners to ensure effective implementation of biodiversity financing strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of current biodiversity financing mechanisms in the Republic of North Macedonia.
  • Develop a national biodiversity financing strategy that aligns with global biodiversity goals and national priorities.
  • Engage with stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, and private sector representatives, to gather input and build consensus on financing strategies.
  • Identify and analyze potential funding sources, including international grants, public funding, and private investments.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on financing strategies and recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions to build capacity among stakeholders on biodiversity financing.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of financing strategies and report on progress to UNDP and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with other UNDP projects and initiatives to ensure synergies and maximize impact.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven expertise in biodiversity financing, including knowledge of funding mechanisms and financial instruments.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex financial data and develop actionable strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in project management and implementation of biodiversity-related projects.
  • Familiarity with international biodiversity frameworks and conventions, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in environmental science, finance, economics, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or training in biodiversity conservation or sustainable finance will be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in biodiversity financing, environmental economics, or related fields is required. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs on biodiversity projects is highly desirable. Proven track record of developing and implementing financing strategies for environmental initiatives is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Macedonian or other local languages is an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of the role.
