Job Overview: The Protection Assistant - Monitoring will play a crucial role in the Danish Refugee Council's operations in the Mai-Tsebri Field Office, focusing on implementing protection monitoring activities in selected IDP sites and host communities. Under the guidance of the Protection team leader and technical supervision from the Protection Specialist-Monitoring, the assistant will be responsible for planning and conducting protection monitoring visits, collecting and analyzing data, and providing direct assistance to individuals at risk. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying protection trends and needs, engaging with community-based structures, and ensuring adherence to ethical data collection protocols. The assistant will also contribute to the development of monitoring tools and participate in relevant training sessions to enhance their skills and knowledge in protection monitoring.
Duties and Responsibilities: The main duties and responsibilities of the Protection Assistant - Monitoring include conducting protection monitoring in assigned areas, contributing to the development and review of protection monitoring tools, identifying protection trends and needs through interviews and discussions, and utilizing data collection systems in line with international standards. The assistant will identify individuals at risk, provide information, and refer them for specialized assistance. They will support protection officers in coordinating and implementing Individual Protection Assistance, monitor beneficiaries' access to services, and conduct community awareness-raising activities. Maintaining good relationships with stakeholders, participating in community engagement, and ensuring data is collected in accordance with protection principles are also key responsibilities. The assistant will document activities, participate in multisectoral assessments, and support the development of reports on protection monitoring activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Protection Assistant - Monitoring position should possess a minimum of one year’s experience in a relevant field, preferably in humanitarian response and refugee/IDP protection. Experience in conducting protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools is essential. Strong data collection, analysis, and reporting skills are required, along with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, a strong work ethic, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, is necessary, and familiarity with data collection and analysis tools such as Kobo is desirable.
Educational Background: A university degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses may also be beneficial, depending on the specific requirements of the role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least one year of experience in an entry to mid-level position within the humanitarian sector, specifically focusing on refugee or IDP protection. Experience working with displaced or conflict-affected populations is highly valued, as is familiarity with protection monitoring practices and tools. Candidates should demonstrate strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
Languages: Fluency in English, Amharic, and Tigrigna is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess excellent skills in speaking, reading, and writing in these languages to effectively communicate with diverse populations and stakeholders in the field.
Additional Notes: The position is a national contract with a duration of four months, based in Mai-Tsebri, Ethiopia. The start date is set for April 2026, and the salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National employees.
