Job Overview:
The Biodiversity Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of UNDP's Biodiversity Programme in India. This position involves working closely with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and other stakeholders to ensure effective programming related to biodiversity conservation. The specialist will be responsible for developing documentation, including background notes and presentations, to facilitate communication and coordination among various partners. The role requires a deep understanding of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its implications for national policies and strategies. The specialist will also guide states in preparing their State Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (SBSAPs) and support the finalization of guidelines and reports related to biodiversity. This position demands a proactive approach to identifying best practices and outcomes, as well as the ability to prepare annual work plans and monitor project progress. The Biodiversity Specialist will be expected to engage in various events, consultations, and training programs to promote biodiversity initiatives and ensure alignment with national and international commitments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and communicate with the MoEFCC to facilitate the smooth implementation of biodiversity programming.
  • Develop background notes, concept notes, presentations, and other documentation for project activities.
  • Contribute to advancing the priorities of the Government of India and UNDP regarding the CBD and other international conventions.
  • Support the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and assist states in preparing their SBSAPs.
  • Aid in the finalization of the OECM guidelines and the Seventh National Report.
  • Organize and manage meetings, consultations, training programs, and social media campaigns with stakeholders.
  • Identify and document best practices and outcomes relevant to biodiversity projects.
  • Prepare Annual Work Plans and monitor the evaluation of biodiversity projects.
  • Undertake any other tasks assigned by the Director of the CS III Division at MoEFCC and the Head of NRM and Biodiversity at UNDP.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Biodiversity Specialist position should possess a strong background in environmental science, biodiversity conservation, or a related field. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in biodiversity policy and management, with a proven ability to engage with government agencies and stakeholders. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-cultural environment. The candidate should also exhibit a commitment to the principles of sustainable development and the UN's core values.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in environmental science, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, or a related field is required for this position. A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a relevant area would be an advantage. Candidates should have a solid understanding of biodiversity policies, international conventions, and sustainable development practices.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 5 years of professional experience in biodiversity conservation, environmental policy, or related fields. Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, or international organizations in biodiversity-related projects is highly desirable. Familiarity with the Convention on Biological Diversity and national biodiversity strategies is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Hindi or other regional languages would be an asset, as it would facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.

Additional Notes:
This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in New Delhi, India. The contract duration is subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance, with no expectation of renewal. The monthly Voluntary Living Allowance (VLA) is INR 64,961.50, along with a one-time entry lump sum payment of USD 40
  • Relocation costs of $200 are provided if the duty station is outside commuting distance. Volunteers are entitled to various leave benefits, including annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave. The position requires cultural sensitivity and the ability to adapt to the local environment.
