Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was established to support Member States in the prevention of illicit drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism. It operates under the framework of the UNODC Regional Programme for South-Eastern Europe for the years 2024 to 202
  • The organization focuses on three main pillars: field-based technical cooperation projects, research and analytical work, and normative, policy, and advocacy work. UNODC aims to enhance the capacity of Member States to combat these issues through technical assistance, training, and the provision of modern technical equipment. The organization emphasizes a balanced approach to drug control, advocating for preventive education and treatment for addicts, while also working to improve domestic legislation and law enforcement effectiveness.

Job Overview:
The Web Development & Integration Volunteer position is part of the Tech Volunteers for Resilience (Tech4R) initiative, which is a collaborative effort led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. This initiative seeks to mobilize skilled digital volunteers to create open-source tools that enhance transparency, accountability, and resilience in various sectors. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tech4R initiative collaborates with UNODC and the Asset Management Agency to develop a Digital Catalogue of Managed Assets. This web-based platform aims to visualize and organize information on confiscated or seized properties, thereby supporting institutional transparency and public trust. The volunteers will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying this platform, ensuring it meets accessibility, stability, and compliance standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The volunteers will undertake several key tasks, including: developing the web-based catalogue using open-source frameworks; structuring both backend and frontend components to facilitate browsing, searching, and filtering of assets; ensuring data integrity and responsive design; implementing multilingual functionality; integrating metadata and geospatial layers, if applicable; allowing for photo uploads into the interface; conducting functionality testing for both mobile and desktop platforms; and preparing comprehensive handover documentation, which includes installation and maintenance guides. These responsibilities are crucial for the successful implementation of the Digital Catalogue and for ensuring that it serves its intended purpose effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this volunteer position should possess a strong understanding of web development principles and practices. They should be proficient in programming languages and frameworks commonly used for web development, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant backend technologies. Familiarity with open-source tools and platforms is essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Volunteers should also demonstrate a commitment to the values of the United Nations and a passion for contributing to social good through technology.

Educational Background:
A background in computer science, information technology, web development, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should have a solid foundation in web development concepts and practices, which may be acquired through formal education, self-study, or practical experience in the field.

Experience:
While this is a volunteer position and does not require extensive professional experience, candidates should have some practical experience in web development, either through previous volunteer work, internships, or personal projects. Experience with open-source frameworks and tools will be particularly beneficial, as the role involves developing a web-based platform using these technologies.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the UN and for the documentation involved in this project. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in Bosnia and Herzegovina, would be considered an asset, as it may enhance the accessibility and usability of the platform for local users.

Additional Notes:
This is an unpaid volunteer assignment, and candidates should be aware that it is not an employment position. Volunteers will receive private insurance coverage for health, dental, life, and dismemberment during the assignment, provided by CIGNA. Additional benefits include opportunities for international collaboration and mentorship, skills development in real-world UN-driven projects, and a Certificate of Service upon completion of the assignment. The position is part of the Tech4R programme, which focuses on mobilizing skilled digital volunteers to create open-source solutions that strengthen disaster resilience.
