In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:

UN Women operates in numerous countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, where it has been active since 2016, focusing on ending violence against women and girls (EVAW) through various initiatives and campaigns, including the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The organization is supported by financial contributions from Sweden, the European Union, and the Government of Denmark, and aims to enhance legislative and institutional frameworks for protecting women from domestic violence and promoting gender equality.

Job Overview:
The National Communications Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting UN Women’s efforts to implement visibility and communications activities for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This position involves planning, coordinating, and executing the campaign, which aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), particularly focusing on technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) and femicide. The consultant will be responsible for developing a comprehensive communication strategy, creating engaging content for various media platforms, supporting campaign events, and maintaining communication with media outlets and journalists. The consultant will work under the supervision of the EVAW Protection Coordinator and in collaboration with the EVAW team and UN Women BiH Communications Associate to ensure effective advocacy and visibility for the campaign.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be expected to deliver a range of communications actions and products to enhance the 16 Days of Activism campaign. Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing a comprehensive strategy and workplan for the campaign, ensuring alignment with global themes and key messages.
  • Creating at least ten communications products such as infographics, quote cards, and videos, along with appropriate social media copy.
  • Supporting the development of knowledge products like factsheets and advocacy briefs.
  • Assisting in organizing campaign-related events, including media outreach and press conferences.
  • Preparing a consolidated communications report summarizing visibility actions and media coverage.
  • Coordinating with the EVAW team to ensure consistency in messaging and branding across all campaign materials.
  • Providing additional support as necessary to ensure the campaign's success.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field such as international development, gender studies, or social science. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. The position requires at least four years of demonstrated work experience in communications, including media relations, and two years of experience in managing media campaigns and online outreach. Candidates should also have experience in producing communication materials for various media, using web editing tools and social media platforms, and delivering communications services for international development organizations. Experience in promoting gender issues and working with women is considered an asset, as is previous experience within the UN System.

Educational Background:
A Master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. Candidates must also provide a professional writing sample from previous projects or campaigns as part of their application.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of four years of demonstrated work experience in communications, with specific experience in media relations and managing media campaigns. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in online outreach and multimedia use, as well as three years of experience in producing communication materials for various media. Experience in using web editing tools and social media platforms is also necessary, along with a background in delivering communications services for international development organizations. Experience in promoting gender issues and working with women is an asset, as is previous experience within the UN System.

Languages:
Fluency in English and B/H/S is mandatory, with excellent spoken and written skills. Candidates must provide a professional writing sample as part of their application to demonstrate their writing capabilities.

  • The consultant may be required to work at UN Women premises in Sarajevo and will need to travel to field locations for events, with all travel expenses covered by UN Women.
