Job Overview:
The Policy and Advocacy Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Mercy Corps Policy and Advocacy team. This internship is designed to provide the intern with hands-on experience in the intersection of policy, advocacy, and international development. The intern will engage in various activities that contribute to the team's efforts to influence U.S. policy in favor of humanitarian and development initiatives. The intern will be expected to work 32 hours per week, with a commitment to at least one in-person day at the Mercy Corps office in Washington, DC. The internship will last for three months, from mid-January to mid-April 2026, and will provide the intern with training, supervisory support, and access to Mercy Corps' online tools and resources. The intern will also be responsible for their own costs related to accommodation, travel, and living expenses, while receiving a monthly stipend of $3207.00.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will assist the Policy and Advocacy team in a variety of tasks, including conducting policy research, drafting advocacy documents, and supporting the preparation of briefings and presentations. Specific responsibilities will include: conducting research to support advocacy initiatives, drafting reports, briefing notes, and factsheets on relevant policy issues, tracking and engaging in the U.S. government appropriations process, attending meetings and hearings, and summarizing key issues for the team. The intern will also help organize meetings with Congressional offices and maintain a database of key interactions. Additionally, the intern will communicate policy updates to the broader Mercy Corps community through various channels.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this internship should possess a university degree in progress or recently completed (within the last year) in fields such as International Relations, Public Policy, Public Administration, or International Development. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in humanitarian and development issues, as well as policy and advocacy. They should demonstrate solid writing, editing, and research skills, and be able to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in computer applications such as MS Word, Excel, and Google applications is essential. A flexible work attitude and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are also important.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in progress or recently completed in relevant fields such as International Relations, Public Policy, Public Administration, or International Development. This educational foundation will provide the intern with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage effectively in policy and advocacy work.

Experience:
While previous experience in policy, international development, or related fields is preferred, it is not mandatory. The ideal candidate may have prior experience working in an administrative capacity or on Capitol Hill, as well as knowledge of Congressional processes. Any specific thematic expertise related to the areas of focus for the internship will be considered a plus, but not a requirement.

Languages:
