In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

> International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
> Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
> United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
The main roles of UN Women are:
> To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms.
> To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society.
> To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview: The Communications and Digital Media Associate position is integral to the UN Women Jordan Country Office, where the incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist and the overall guidance of the Country Representative. This role is crucial for fulfilling the advocacy and communications responsibilities of UN Women in Jordan. The associate will collaborate closely with the UN interagency Communications Group and other members of the UN Women Jordan Country Office, contributing to the development and implementation of communication strategies that promote gender equality and women's empowerment. The position involves creating and disseminating communication materials, managing social media presence, and supporting various advocacy initiatives, including the annual Women Film Festival. The associate will also be responsible for monitoring media coverage and analyzing social media engagement to inform communication strategies and enhance outreach efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Communications and Digital Media Associate include providing substantive support to the planning and design of external communication and outreach strategies, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into communication strategies. The associate will monitor and analyze print and social media, develop communication and advocacy materials, create visual content, and manage the UN Women Jordan Country Office's website and social media platforms. Additionally, the associate will support media relations, coordinate the Country Office's online presence, and provide general administrative support to the Communications Unit. This includes organizing events, maintaining relationships with vendors, and ensuring compliance with UN Women rules and regulations. The incumbent will also perform other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the office and the organization.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of communication strategies, advocacy, and outreach, with a focus on gender equality and women's empowerment. They should have experience in creating visual content and managing social media platforms. Proficiency in digital media tools and software is essential, along with strong writing and editing skills. The ability to analyze media coverage and social media engagement is also required. Candidates should demonstrate adaptability, creativity, and professionalism in their work, as well as strong organizational and planning skills.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is required for this position. Advanced degrees or certifications in relevant areas will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of gender issues and the role of communication in promoting gender equality.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or advocacy, preferably within the context of gender equality and women's empowerment. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations will be an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic and English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages will be considered an asset, particularly in the context of communication and outreach efforts.
Additional Notes: This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Amman, Jordan. The UN Volunteer will receive a monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of JOD 916.06, along with annual and learning leaves, free medical and life insurance, and access to various learning platforms. The incumbent will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The living conditions in Amman are generally favorable, with a peaceful environment and accessible services. The position is categorized as a family duty station (category A hardship) according to the UN Department of Safety & Security.
