Job Overview:
The Climate and Environment Team Leader position is a pivotal role within the Uganda Refugee Resilience Initiative (URRI) program, which aims to enhance climate resilience among vulnerable populations, including refugees and host communities. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the technical quality and due diligence of environmental activities across six districts in Uganda. This role involves overseeing the implementation of various environmental projects, supporting community training initiatives, and ensuring that all activities align with donor requirements and local government policies. The Team Leader will also play a crucial role in fostering collaboration among stakeholders and ensuring effective communication between communities and project partners. The position requires a proactive approach to managing environmental risks and promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the communities served.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Climate and Environment Team Leader include overseeing the day-to-day management of the URRI program, ensuring alignment with donor requirements and local policies, supervising technical staff, and managing relationships with implementing partners. The Team Leader will conduct technical assessments, coordinate project activities with district officials, and lead initiatives related to forestry, land restoration, and environmental risk management. Additionally, the role involves supporting the Green Livelihoods program, facilitating community training sessions, and participating in awareness campaigns. The Team Leader will also be responsible for monitoring project progress, documenting successes and challenges, and providing data for donor reports. Overall, this position requires a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues and the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Climate and Environment Team Leader position, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Management, Forestry, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in environment or climate-related interventions is required, along with experience leading at least 3 projects in a similar capacity. Candidates should have a broad knowledge of resilience design, climate change, and biodiversity conservation, as well as experience working with donor-funded projects and international NGOs. Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills are essential, along with a commitment to gender equality and accountability practices. The ability to prioritize tasks and work independently is also crucial for success in this role.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field such as Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Management, or Forestry. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding the complexities of environmental management and climate resilience, which are critical to the success of the URRI program. Additional training or certifications related to resilience design and environmental conservation may be beneficial and are considered desirable qualifications for this position.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of full-time relevant professional experience in environment or climate-related interventions. Candidates should have a proven track record of leading projects in similar roles, demonstrating their ability to manage complex environmental initiatives effectively. Experience working in Northern Uganda is particularly valuable, as it provides insight into the specific challenges and opportunities present in the region. Familiarity with donor-funded projects and international NGOs is also essential, as it ensures that candidates understand the operational and reporting requirements associated with such initiatives.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communication, documentation, and reporting will be conducted in English. Proficiency in local languages spoken in the project areas may be advantageous, as it can facilitate better communication with community members and stakeholders. Candidates who possess additional language skills relevant to the local context will be viewed favorably, as this can enhance the effectiveness of community engagement efforts.

The Climate and Environment Team Leader position is a full-time role with a contract length of 12 months, based in Arua, Uganda. The expected start date for this position is January 202
