Its mission is to strengthen and harmonize the UN's activities in the field of human rights. This establishment followed the World Conference on Human Rights in 1993, which reaffirmed the international community's commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. OHCHR operates as a distinct organization within the UN system, with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, where it also serves as the secretariat for the Human Rights Council. The OHCHR's mandate includes promoting and protecting all human rights, providing technical assistance to states, coordinating education and information programs, and supporting the elimination of barriers to the full enjoyment of human rights. The organization operates in various countries, including the Central African Republic, where it works through the Human Rights Division of MINUSCA to provide technical assistance, monitoring, and support for peace, accountability, and the rule of law.
Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position is part of the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) project aimed at enhancing the role of local women's organizations in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in the Central African Republic (CAR). This project, implemented jointly by OHCHR and UN Women, focuses on strengthening the capacity of these organizations to contribute to social cohesion, human rights advocacy, and the Women, Peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security agenda. The UN Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting the administrative and financial management of the project, operational coordination, strategic planning, communication, and visibility efforts. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure the successful implementation of the project’s objectives, which include linking formal and community-based peace processes and emphasizing economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR) and inclusive participation. The volunteer will engage with community-based women's organizations, local authorities, civil society, and technical partners to foster collaboration and support the project's goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: A. Administrative and Financial Management: Supporting the preparation and archiving of financial and administrative documents such as payments, justifications, and reports; monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with the approved budget and OHCHR and PBF rules; and contributing to quarterly and annual financial reporting. B. Operational Coordination and Monitoring: Monitoring the implementation of the project’s annual work plan; coordinating logistics and administration of field activities; facilitating collaboration with women’s organizations, local authorities, ministries, and technical partners; supporting missions, events, and workshops; and contributing to monitoring and evaluation activities, including data collection and reporting. C. Strategic Planning and Reporting: Assisting in drafting and formatting project narrative reports (midterm and final); documenting results, lessons learned, and best practices; and contributing to internal and external communication materials. D. Communication and Visibility: Assisting in implementing the project’s communication strategy; drafting articles, photo reports, and other communication products; and supporting advocacy for the role of women in peacebuilding. E. Cross-cutting Support: Supporting resource mobilization and partner engagement; and performing other tasks as assigned by the project coordinators.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for this position should possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. They should demonstrate accountability, adaptability, creativity, and sound judgment in decision-making. The ideal candidate should also exhibit professionalism and self-management skills, with a commitment to the values of the United Nations.
Educational Background: A degree in social sciences, international relations, human rights, or a related field is required. Additional training or certifications in project management, financial management, or human rights advocacy would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have prior experience in project support, administration, or financial management, preferably in a humanitarian or development context. Experience working with women's organizations or in peacebuilding initiatives is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN processes and procedures is a plus.
Languages: Fluency in French is mandatory, as it is the working language in the Central African Republic. Proficiency in English is an asset, and knowledge of local languages would be beneficial.
Additional Notes: This UN Volunteer assignment is based in Bangui, the capital city of the Central African Republic, which is classified as a non-family duty station due to security concerns and limited access to essential services. Volunteers should be prepared to live and work in challenging conditions with limited amenities. The position is full-time, and the duration of the contract is typically determined by the project needs and funding availability. Security protocols must be followed at all times, and travel within the city and to field locations requires prior authorization and coordination with the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS).
