Job Overview: The Project Assistant (WASH) will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the African Development Bank (AfDB) funded Sudan Integrated Social Sector Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project (SISSIRP). This project aims to restore and expand access to essential services in health, technical and vocational education, and water and sanitation across four states in Sudan. The Project Assistant will provide strategic and technical support to ensure that WASH program functions are carried out in accordance with IOM’s regulations and standards. The role involves monitoring the activities of implementing partners, conducting site visits, and ensuring that projects are progressing as planned. The Project Assistant will also be responsible for drafting reports, assessing potential partners, and contributing to capacity-building initiatives. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to achieve project goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Assistant (WASH) will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: providing technical support to AfDB-funded WASH implementing partners, monitoring their activities to ensure compliance with national and IOM standards, conducting regular site visits to verify project progress, participating in assessments of potential WASH partners, drafting monitoring reports on sub-grantees' activities, tracking challenges faced by partners, reviewing narrative and financial reports, conducting follow-up visits to assess project impact, attending WASH Cluster meetings, facilitating documentation of projects, and contributing to the implementation of the project capacity building plan. The Project Assistant will also accompany the Programme Manager and other stakeholders on site visits, providing insights on project progress and context, and will perform any other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school degree or equivalent with at least five years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on water supply and sanitation, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, or a related field from an accredited institution, along with at least three years of relevant experience. The educational qualifications must be from accredited universities recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of WASH projects and possess the ability to work effectively in diverse environments.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent with significant professional experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Public Health. The degree must be obtained from an accredited academic institution, ensuring that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in the role.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in WASH projects, ideally within humanitarian, development, or emergency contexts. This includes experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring WASH facilities, as well as hands-on experience in technical assessments, site planning, construction supervision, and quality assurance of WASH interventions. Experience in coordinating with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community groups, is essential. A proven track record in preparing technical documents and assisting in procurement and contract management is also required.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic and English is mandatory for this position, both oral and written. IOM’s official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be beneficial. Language skills will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments to ensure candidates meet the communication requirements of the role.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Sudan will be considered. The appointment will depend on the candidate's medical fitness, verification of residency, and necessary government authorizations.
