Job Overview:

The intern will support the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC), which plays a crucial role in assisting UN senior leadership with decision-making processes related to peacekeeping and crisis management. The intern will be involved in various tasks that require analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with real-time data and contribute to the UN's mission of maintaining international peace and security. The internship is expected to last between three to six months, with opportunities available from October 2025 to September 2026, and it is essential for candidates to be available for full-time work (35 hours per week) on-site at the UN premises in New York, although hybrid arrangements may be considered based on the candidate's needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Head of the UNOCC Watch Room. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the analysis and visualization of both structured and unstructured data sourced from UNOCC Data Repositories.
  • Drafting and formatting meeting minutes, outcome notes, briefings, country profiles, visual aids, and presentations for UN senior leadership.
  • Conducting open-source monitoring and research to support the UNOCC's objectives.
  • Helping organize enhanced monitoring and crisis management meetings.
  • Undertaking additional assignments as required by the UNOCC team. The intern will gain valuable insights into the workings of the UN and develop skills in data analysis, communication, and teamwork.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications and possess a strong interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals outlined in the UN Charter.

Educational Background:
The preferred field of study for applicants includes political science, history, international relations, law, or a related discipline. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of international relations and the UN's role in global governance.

Experience:
While prior professional experience is not mandatory for this internship, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and possess relevant academic knowledge that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. Any previous internships or volunteer work related to international relations, crisis management, or data analysis will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the United Nations. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those of UN member states, is considered a valuable asset and may enhance the candidate's application.
