Job Overview: The UN Volunteer GIS Specialist will be stationed at the Ramallah office of UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (PAPP). This role is crucial for supporting the Investment Programme for Resilience (IPR) by managing geospatial data and creating visual tools that aid in program planning, implementation, and reporting. The specialist will lead efforts in data management, visualization, and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure that the program's objectives are met effectively. The position requires a proactive approach to data handling and the ability to develop innovative solutions for data presentation and analysis, thereby enhancing decision-making processes within the program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Data Management and Visualization: Lead the collection, cleaning, structuring, and maintenance of geospatial and non-spatial data. Develop dashboards, static and interactive maps, and visual tools using ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online. Ensure timely updates and accuracy of spatial data layers and programmatic indicators. Design and manage the GIS-based Management Information System (MIS) hosted on UNDP’s ArcGIS platform. Automate mapping and reporting processes using Python and ArcGIS tools. Create story maps and infographics for donor visibility. Design Excel-based reporting tools for sub-projects and ensure data entry completeness.
Shared Folder and Data Repository Oversight: Organize and manage the programme’s GIS and data folders, ensuring proper version control and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security.
Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with the Monitoring and Knowledge Management Associate to align data products with M&E requirements. Support team members with tailored data and mapping outputs. Provide training to project team and UNDP partners.

Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should possess a strong understanding of GIS principles and practices, with proficiency in ArcGIS software. Experience in data management and visualization is essential, along with the ability to automate processes using programming tools. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. The candidate should demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the values of the UN.
Educational Background: A degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in GIS or related disciplines are preferred. Knowledge of data management systems and experience with geospatial analysis tools are highly desirable.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in GIS, data management, or a related field. Experience working in development contexts, particularly in the Palestinian territories or similar environments, is an advantage. Familiarity with UNDP procedures and operations is a plus.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of the role.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position offers a 12-month contract with potential extensions based on funding and performance. A Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of ILS 6,740 is provided monthly to cover living expenses. The contract includes life, health, and permanent disability insurance, as well as health coverage for up to three dependents and an exit allowance for satisfactory service.
