Job Overview: The Printing Press Operator / Print Finisher position is situated within the Publications & Conference Management Section (PCMS) of UNECA. The role involves overseeing the print finishing operations to ensure the timely production of official documents and publications. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Head of Production Services and the printing supervisor, coordinating the workflow of a specific shift. Responsibilities include operating print-finishing equipment, ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and maintaining a safe and organized work environment. The position requires effective communication with various stakeholders, including graphic designers and printers, to ensure clarity in job specifications. The operator will also be responsible for training junior staff, maintaining equipment, and performing administrative tasks related to production statistics and reporting.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Printing Press Operator / Print Finisher include: organizing and coordinating the work of a shift to ensure timely production; operating print-finishing equipment such as collators, folders, and binders according to SOPs; identifying hazardous tasks and ensuring compliance with safety guidelines; interfacing with the Front Desk and graphic designers for job clarity; distributing assignments for efficient documentation processing; maintaining daily production statistics; interpreting technical specifications for print finishing; performing operator-level troubleshooting and maintenance on equipment; ensuring a clean and organized work area; informing supervisors of equipment issues; training junior staff; performing supervisory functions in the absence of the team leader; and assisting with data collection and analysis for reporting purposes. The role may also require weekend on-call duties and availability for overtime as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with studies or training in electromechanical engineering being desirable. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience as a print finisher is required, which may be reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher. Knowledge of printing industry standards, desktop publishing, and data analytics is advantageous. The role demands a strong understanding of print finishing processes and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Additional studies or training in electromechanical engineering are considered desirable, as they provide relevant technical knowledge that can enhance the candidate's ability to perform the job effectively.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in print finishing. However, this requirement is reduced to five years for candidates who hold a first-level university degree or higher. Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
