Job Overview: The Country Lead for the RESIslands Project will play a pivotal role in the effective and well-coordinated implementation of project activities at the national level. This position requires strong stakeholder engagement, ensuring that project activities align with national priorities while strengthening institutional capacities within the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC) member states. The Country Lead will serve as the in-country focal point for all RESIslands activities, facilitating consultations, workshops, and training sessions to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate risks. The role demands a proactive approach to stakeholder engagement, ensuring that all project activities are executed smoothly and effectively, while also supporting the development of knowledge products and research activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Country Lead will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including:
Stakeholder Engagement: Organizing national-level workshops, consultations, and training events; liaising with various ministries, local governments, and civil society; and facilitating meetings to ensure stakeholder involvement.
Implementation: Providing technical assistance for country-level project deliverables, preparing local field visits, and conducting assessments of vulnerabilities and risks.
Reporting & Monitoring: Preparing timely technical progress reports and documentation for UNECA and the NDA, monitoring outputs to ensure alignment with work plans and budgets.
Knowledge Management: Collecting data for use cases and toolkits, facilitating the dissemination of best practices and lessons learned.
Sustainability & Institutional Ownership: Engaging national stakeholders in the preparation and validation of project deliverables, ensuring post-project uptake of platforms and tools developed during the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s level) in relevant fields such as Climate Science, Environmental Policy, Project Management, Economics, Social Sciences, Geography, or Geoinformatics. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in climate resilience, institutional development, or project coordination is required. Experience in leading donor-funded climate or development projects and working with government entities is highly desirable. Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis will be considered an asset.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s level) in fields related to climate science, environmental policy, project management, economics, social sciences, geography, or geoinformatics. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of climate resilience and institutional development.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in areas related to climate resilience, institutional development, or project coordination. Candidates with prior experience leading donor-funded climate or development projects and those who have worked with government entities will be preferred. Experience at the national or regional level in climate, environment, or risk management is also desirable, along with a background in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this consultancy, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in both languages is essential for effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders and partners involved in the project.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time consultancy position that requires professional exclusivity during the contract period. The expected duration of the consultancy is 6 months, and the position is based in Port Louis, Mauritius, with responsibilities extending to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
