Job Overview:
The Country Lead for the RESIslands Project will play a crucial role in the effective and well-coordinated implementation of project activities at the national level. This position is designed to ensure strong stakeholder engagement, alignment with national priorities, and the strengthening of institutional capacities within the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC) member states. The Country Lead will serve as the in-country focal point for all RESIslands activities, facilitating consultations, workshops, and training events, while also supporting institutional strengthening and capacity building. The role requires a deep understanding of climate resilience and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government institutions, civil society, and local communities, to ensure the successful delivery of project objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Country Lead will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Organizing national-level workshops, consultations, and training events; liaising with the NDA, AISCC NFP, and relevant ministries; facilitating meetings with local governments, civil society, and academia.
  • Implementation: Providing technical assistance for country-level project deliverables; preparing local field visits and assessments; facilitating logistics for activities and procurement of services.
  • Reporting & Monitoring: Elaborating technical progress reports and documentation; monitoring outputs to ensure alignment with work plans and budgets.
  • Knowledge Management: Collecting data for use cases and KM tools; facilitating the dissemination of best practices.
  • Sustainability & Institutional Ownership: Engaging national stakeholders for deliverable preparation and validation; ensuring post-project uptake of platforms and toolkits.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s level) in relevant fields such as Climate Science, Environmental Policy, Project Management, Economics, Social Sciences, Geography, or Geoinformatics. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in climate resilience, institutional development, or project coordination is required. Experience leading donor-funded climate or development projects and working with governments is highly desirable, as is prior engagement in climate, environment, or risk management at a national or regional level. Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s level) in fields related to climate science, environmental policy, project management, economics, social sciences, geography, or geoinformatics. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of climate resilience and institutional development within the context of the RESIslands Project.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in areas related to climate resilience, institutional development, or project coordination. Candidates should have prior experience leading donor-funded projects and working with government entities, which is crucial for navigating the complexities of stakeholder engagement and project implementation. Experience in climate, environment, or risk management at a national or regional level is also desirable, as is familiarity with data collection and analysis.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and French is mandatory for this consultancy, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders involved in the RESIslands Project.

This consultancy position is full-time and requires professional exclusivity during the contract period.
