Job Overview: The Publications Officer position is integral to the MSF Access Team, which is responsible for producing a high volume of internal and external publications. This role is designed to enhance the editorial and writing capacity of the existing communications team and manage the publication process effectively. The Publications Officer will work under the supervision of the MSF Access Head of Advocacy, coordinating all stages of publication preparation, including concept development, commissioning, writing, editing, layout, and design. The role requires collaboration with experts within the MSF Access Team and external resources when necessary. The Publications Officer will also support other communication tasks and ongoing initiatives, projects, and campaigns, ensuring that the publications align with MSF Access's advocacy objectives and effectively communicate the impact of healthcare issues on patients.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Publications Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: managing and leading the writing, editing, review, and production of a wide variety of MSF Access publications, such as policy and technical reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, letters, statements, and talking points; advising the MSF Access Team on the planning, production, and dissemination of research and analysis publications; engaging with publication content leads to develop production plans that define roles, responsibilities, timelines, and budgets; collaborating closely with the communications team to ensure that publications are integrated into broader digital and media strategies; maintaining and improving editorial standards and guidelines; managing production, design, and distribution of publications through relationships with external service providers; developing and executing targeted dissemination strategies to maximize visibility and uptake of publications; and working with Strategic Communications Advisors to integrate the voices of MSF medical practitioners and their patients into publications.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Publications Officer position should possess strong editorial and writing skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. They should have experience in publication management, including writing, editing, and production processes. Familiarity with advocacy and communication strategies in a humanitarian context is essential. The ideal candidate should also demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms is highly desirable, as is the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders effectively.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field is required for the Publications Officer position. Advanced degrees or specialized training in relevant areas may be advantageous. Candidates should have a strong understanding of communication principles and practices, particularly in the context of humanitarian work and advocacy.
Experience: The Publications Officer should have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in communications, publication management, or a related field. Experience working in a humanitarian or non-profit organization is highly preferred, as is familiarity with the challenges and dynamics of advocacy work. The candidate should demonstrate a track record of producing high-quality publications and effective communication materials.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for the Publications Officer position, as all publications will primarily be produced in English. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, is considered a strong asset, as it will enhance the ability to reach diverse audiences and stakeholders.
