Job Overview:
The consultant will play a crucial role in setting up the computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) infrastructure for a research project aimed at assessing the impact of site-specific fertilizer recommendations based on farm-level soil tests. This position involves technical responsibilities, including the development of the Open Data Kit (ODK) application for data capture, as well as logistical support for field operations. The consultant will also be responsible for training enumerators in Lilongwe and overseeing the data collection process in the field. The consultant will collaborate closely with researchers based in Lilongwe, ensuring that the data collection aligns with the project's objectives. Fieldwork is anticipated to commence towards the end of May and will last approximately 25 days, requiring travel to Malawi.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Implement the ODK questionnaire for data collection, ensuring that it meets the project's requirements.
  • Manage the backend of the data collection process, including the integration of ODK with Ona server for efficient data handling.
  • Conduct training sessions for enumerators to ensure they are well-prepared for data collection.
  • Oversee the data collection process in the field, ensuring adherence to protocols and quality standards.
  • Monitor the data collection activities, providing support and guidance to enumerators as needed.
  • Analyze the data collected during the fieldwork to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Maintain effective communication with project stakeholders, including researchers and local community leaders.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in conducting quantitative survey fieldwork, demonstrating a strong understanding of survey methodologies.
  • Experience in conducting training related to survey techniques and data collection processes.
  • Ability to build trust and establish good relationships with village leaders, interviewees, and local communities.
  • Strong program management skills, with a track record of successfully coordinating large field teams and managing project deliverables.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in using ODK for data collection and managing technical backend processes, with a preference for experience in Ona server integration.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, agricultural sciences, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in research methodologies or data management are preferred.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in quantitative survey research, with a focus on fieldwork and data collection. Experience in managing field teams and conducting training sessions is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all application materials must be submitted in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Malawi would be advantageous but is not required.
