Job Overview:
The National Social and Environment Safeguards Specialist (SES) position is part of the Financing Agro-chemical Reduction and Management Plus (FARM+) initiative, which aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices in Nepal. The specialist will be responsible for preparing project documents that align with the objectives of the FARM+ initiative, which seeks to transition agricultural practices towards sustainability and climate resilience. This role involves ensuring that interventions in the agricultural sector are mutually beneficial and do not cause unintended harm to the environment. The SES will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies and agricultural stakeholders, to unlock resources and repurpose existing financial resources for sustainable practices. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of social and environmental safeguards, as well as the ability to navigate complex agricultural and environmental issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Consultant SES Specialist include:
  • Conducting thorough assessments of current agricultural practices and their impact on the environment and social systems.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to develop project documents that reflect the goals of the FARM+ initiative.
  • Ensuring compliance with social and environmental safeguards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Providing technical expertise in the formulation of strategies to promote sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Engaging with local communities to gather insights and feedback on proposed interventions.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of implemented strategies and making necessary adjustments.
  • Reporting on progress and challenges to UNDP and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitating workshops and training sessions to build capacity among stakeholders regarding sustainable practices.
  • Contributing to the development of communication materials that promote the FARM+ initiative.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the National Consultant SES Specialist position include:
  • A strong background in environmental science, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in social and environmental safeguards, particularly in the context of agricultural projects.
  • Familiarity with UNDP policies and procedures related to project management and safeguards.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.

Educational Background:
Candidates should possess at least a Master's degree in environmental science, social sciences, agriculture, or a related field. A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area will be considered an asset. Additional certifications in project management or social and environmental safeguards will also be beneficial.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in social and environmental safeguards, particularly in the agricultural sector. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, and local communities is highly desirable. Candidates should have a track record of successfully managing projects that involve multiple stakeholders and complex environmental issues.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Nepali or other local languages is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.

  • This is a consultancy role, and the consultant will be expected to work flexibly to meet project needs. The position is open to both national and international candidates, and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
