Job Overview:
The position of Praktikant*in Sektorvorhaben Governance involves working at the intersection of the Ministry and implementation organizations of German development cooperation. The intern will support the Governance Sector Project, which advises the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on overarching governance issues related to German state development cooperation. The role includes assisting in the development and positioning of approaches, strategies, and methods in the governance sector, as well as facilitating professional exchanges and networking with national and international stakeholders. The intern will engage in topics such as digital governance, democracy, and the rule of law, contributing to the expansion of political participation opportunities and the promotion of a sustainable and digital administration.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the professional advisory services on governance topics, particularly digital governance.
  • Conducting often short-term research and preparing national and international debates and political processes in the governance area.
  • Creating background documents, position papers, presentations, and commentaries.
  • Assisting in management processes and organizing (virtual) events such as conferences, expert discussions, and meetings.
  • Managing knowledge within the project. The intern will also have the opportunity to set their own focus areas during the internship and gain insights into the diverse operations of GIZ.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least a completed undergraduate degree or a bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, social sciences, law, economics, or a comparable field of study. High communication skills are essential, with the ability to prepare information clearly and target it to specific audiences. As GIZ serves as a service provider for the ministry, native-level proficiency in German is required, along with very good English skills in both written and spoken forms. Organizational talent, teamwork, and flexibility in switching between topics are important attributes. Candidates should also demonstrate good time management skills and the ability to produce quality results under pressure. Analytical skills to quickly grasp new and complex issues and an interest in developing and implementing innovative approaches are also necessary. Experience in organizing (virtual) events and workshops is advantageous, as are strong IT skills. Ideally, candidates should have knowledge of German development cooperation and prior knowledge of governance topics. Practical experience in developing countries is beneficial but not mandatory.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a completed undergraduate degree or a bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as political science, public administration, social sciences, law, economics, or similar disciplines. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of governance and development cooperation.

Experience:
The position does not require extensive prior experience, but candidates should demonstrate some familiarity with governance topics and the workings of development cooperation. Any practical experience, particularly in developing countries, is considered a plus but is not a strict requirement for applicants.

Languages:
Proficiency in German at a native level is mandatory due to the nature of the work with the ministry. Very good English language skills, both written and spoken, are also required. Knowledge of additional languages may be beneficial but is not specified as a requirement.
