Job Overview:
The ERS Internship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience for interns, focusing on emergency response services related to coordination efforts during new or escalating emergencies and disasters. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that support the UN's mission in disaster response, including rapid deployment of staff, logistical support, and capacity building. The internship is expected to last for six months, preferably from June to November 2025, and can be conducted in-person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, depending on the successful candidate's preferences. Interns will gain valuable insights into the workings of international humanitarian efforts and contribute to enhancing disaster response preparedness and capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a range of duties, including but not limited to: supporting the rapid deployment of staff and experts in response to emergencies; providing logistical support and operational assistance to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA); compiling and disseminating operational response guidance; building capacity among responders and fostering partnerships; strengthening national and international disaster response and preparedness capacities; facilitating initial disaster assessments and coordination; managing rosters and networks for effective deployment of humanitarian experts; providing technical services to support field operations; collaborating with partners to develop international response standards, including urban search and rescue activities; and maintaining and developing effective networks such as the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) and the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Additionally, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a relevant educational background, which may include a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree in fields such as international relations, humanitarian studies, disaster management, or other related disciplines. The educational qualifications should align with the responsibilities of the internship, ensuring that the intern can effectively contribute to the UN's emergency response efforts.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic training or coursework that prepares them for the responsibilities of the position. This may include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to emergency response, humanitarian assistance, or international development.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is considered desirable, as it is also a working language of the UN, and proficiency in additional languages may enhance the candidate's application.

Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
