Job Overview:
The intern will play a crucial role within the Communications, Innovation and Partnerships team at UNDP China. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to gain hands-on experience in the field of communications and public relations within an international development context. The intern will support the implementation of the Country Office’s internal and external communications strategy, which is vital for promoting UNDP’s work and enhancing its visibility. The role involves drafting various outreach communications materials aimed at both domestic and international audiences, including op-eds, press releases, speeches, and social media content. Additionally, the intern will assist in preparing materials for communications and partnerships outreach, providing on-site event support, and conducting research to compile background materials and statistical data for advocacy activities. This internship offers a unique opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and contribute to meaningful development initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Supporting the implementation of the Country Office’s internal and external communications strategy.
  • Drafting outreach communications materials targeting both domestic and international audiences, which may include op-eds, press releases, speeches, website content, social media posts, reports, and other publications.
  • Assisting in the preparation of communications and partnerships outreach materials, such as PowerPoint presentations and brochures.
  • Providing on-site event support, including photo-taking and video shooting.
  • Conducting research and compiling background materials, statistical data, and briefing notes for advocacy and outreach activities.
  • Completing other ad hoc tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the United Nations. Relevant experience in content development, journalism, communication, media events, or social media campaign design is essential. The ideal candidate will exhibit leadership qualities through involvement in university or social activities, such as Model United Nations (MUN). Strong oral and written communication skills in English are required, while fluency in Chinese is preferable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and other online collaborative tools is necessary. The candidate should be proactive, organized, self-motivated, honest, confident, responsible, detail-oriented, patient, and skilled in communication. A willingness to learn and share new ideas with the team is also important.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a major in international relations, social sciences, communications, journalism, or other relevant fields. Experience in areas such as sustainable development, climate change, or gender issues will be considered an asset. Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:
  • Enrolled in a Master's or PhD program.
  • In the final year of a Bachelor’s program.
  • Within one year after graduation from a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program.
  • Enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertaking the internship as part of this program.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant experience in communications, journalism, or related fields. This could include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects that demonstrate the ability to develop content and engage with various audiences. Experience in sustainable development or related areas is a plus, as it aligns with UNDP's mission and objectives.

Languages:
Strong oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory, while fluency in Chinese is preferable. Additional skills in online and offline communications, such as video editing or photo editing, will be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to contribute effectively to the team.

Additional Notes:
The internship conditions stipulate that interns must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan and a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. Any costs arising from accidents or illnesses incurred during the internship will be the responsibility of the intern. Interns will receive a monthly stipend and are entitled to 1.5 days of leave per month. They are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station. Costs related to travel, visas, accommodations, and living expenses are the responsibility of the nominating institution or the intern. Interns must not apply for or be appointed to a position that should be filled by a staff member during their internship. They are expected to fulfill the terms of their internships and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity. Additionally, it is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees in connection with the application or recruitment process.
