The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat, established to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asia and Pacific region. ESCAP supports its member states through policy-oriented research, normative support, technical assistance, and capacity building to address the development priorities and changing needs of the region. The Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM), based in Beijing, is part of ESCAP's efforts to enhance technical cooperation among member states and promote research and development in sustainable agricultural mechanization and technology, aligning with internationally agreed development goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Overview:

Interns will engage in various tasks that support ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the Asia and Pacific region. The internship is full-time and unpaid, with a minimum duration of two months, extendable up to six months. Interns will work under the supervision of experienced staff members, gaining insights into the workings of the United Nations and contributing to meaningful projects that align with the organization's mission. Responsibilities will vary based on the intern's background and the specific needs of the division, allowing for a tailored experience that enhances both personal and professional development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a range of activities that may include: providing support to ongoing projects related to sustainable agricultural mechanization; assisting in social media outreach efforts to promote ESCAP's initiatives; offering administrative support to ensure smooth operations within the division; working on presentations that communicate project goals and outcomes; and consolidating and sorting data to assist in research and analysis. The specific duties will depend on the intern's skills and the duration of their internship, allowing for a diverse and enriching experience.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). This ensures that interns possess a foundational understanding of relevant academic concepts and are prepared to engage in professional tasks within the organization.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in fields related to sustainable development, agricultural sciences, environmental studies, or other relevant disciplines. This educational foundation will enable interns to contribute effectively to the projects and initiatives they will be involved in during their internship.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant experience in project management, research, or administrative roles will be considered an asset. Interns are expected to demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the dynamic environment of the United Nations, showcasing their ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural setting.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for the internship programme, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language. Proficiency in additional languages may enhance an applicant's profile but is not mandatory.
