Job Overview:
The consultant will be engaged to draft the Third Edition of the Gender Alert, focusing on the impact of famine conditions in Sudan, particularly on women and girls. This role involves analyzing how famine has affected key sectors such as health, education, and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), as well as the coping strategies adopted by women and girls in response to the crisis. The Gender Alert will serve as a critical advocacy tool aimed at increasing nutrition" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food and nutrition-related humanitarian interventions and promoting gender-sensitive approaches in humanitarian responses. The consultant will be responsible for assessing the impact of the famine on displaced women and girls and those from host communities, documenting the worsening of gender inequality, and providing actionable recommendations for improving humanitarian responses from a gender perspective.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assess and document the impact of famine on displaced women and girls, focusing on health, education, and WASH sectors.
  • Analyze the contribution of famine to worsening gender inequality and increased reliance on coping mechanisms by women and girls.
  • Identify actors involved in responding to the famine and evaluate the gender dimension of food distribution.
  • Provide actionable recommendations for enhancing gender considerations in famine response.
  • Prepare an inception report outlining methodology, data sources, and analysis framework within one week of contract start.
  • Draft the Gender Alert detailing research findings and analysis.
  • Submit the final version of the Gender Alert, incorporating feedback from UN Women’s team, ready for publication and dissemination.
  • Conduct key informant interviews and focus group discussions with affected women and girls, humanitarian actors, and local stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in gender studies, international development, humanitarian assistance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in gender issues within humanitarian or development contexts.
  • Proven expertise in conducting gender analyses and producing gender-sensitive reports.
  • Familiarity with the humanitarian context in Sudan and challenges faced by women and girls in conflict settings.
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of famine on food security and the ability to adapt interventions to be gender-sensitive.
  • Experience working with UN agencies or international organizations is an asset.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree in gender studies, international development, humanitarian assistance, or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of gender issues in humanitarian contexts and for conducting thorough analyses that inform effective interventions.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 10 years of professional experience working on gender issues, particularly in humanitarian or development settings. This extensive experience is crucial for understanding the nuances of gender dynamics in crisis situations and for effectively contributing to the drafting of the Gender Alert.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory for this position, as the consultant will need to communicate effectively with various stakeholders and produce reports in these languages. Knowledge of any other UN official language is considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with a broader audience and access diverse resources.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy will be home-based and is expected to last for a period of 4 weeks, starting as soon as possible. The payment schedule is divided into three parts: 25% upon approval of the inception report, 40% upon submission of the draft Gender Alert, and 35% upon submission of the final Gender Alert. The consultant is expected to adopt a gender-responsive and participatory approach to data collection and analysis, ensuring that the voices of women and girls affected by the famine are included in the research process.
