Job Overview:
The GIS and Landscape Mapping Specialist will be responsible for providing expert guidance and technical support for the PPG SCCF-GEF8 Samoa Project. This role involves utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and landscape mapping techniques to analyze and visualize spatial data related to environmental and development projects in Samoa. The specialist will work closely with local stakeholders, government agencies, and project teams to ensure that mapping efforts align with project goals and contribute to effective decision-making. The position requires a strong understanding of GIS technologies, landscape ecology, and the ability to communicate complex data in an accessible manner. The specialist will also be expected to contribute to capacity building efforts within local institutions to enhance their GIS capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct spatial analysis and mapping of environmental data relevant to the PPG SCCF-GEF8 Samoa Project.
  • Develop and maintain GIS databases to support project activities.
  • Collaborate with project teams to integrate GIS data into project planning and implementation.
  • Provide training and support to local stakeholders on GIS tools and techniques.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on mapping findings and recommendations.
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of GIS data and outputs.
  • Stay updated on the latest GIS technologies and methodologies to enhance project outcomes.
  • Engage with local communities to gather data and insights for mapping initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of project proposals and funding applications related to GIS and landscape mapping.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven expertise in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and landscape mapping techniques.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex spatial data.
  • Experience in environmental management or related fields.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field is required. A Master's degree is preferred and may be considered an asset. Additional certifications in GIS or related technologies will be advantageous.

Experience:
At least 5 years of professional experience in GIS and landscape mapping is required. Experience working on environmental projects in the Pacific region or similar contexts will be highly regarded. Previous experience with UNDP or similar international organizations is a plus.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Samoan or other local languages is considered an asset and will enhance communication with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is for an individual contractor and is expected to last for 10 working days over an 8-month period. The role is part-time and may require flexibility in scheduling to accommodate project needs. The contractor will be compensated according to UNDP's rates for individual contractors, and benefits may include access to training and professional development opportunities.
