The intern will work within the Department for Sustainable Economic and Financial Systems at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which is responsible for steering and implementing this infrastructure initiative. The role involves providing process and technical advice on cross-sectoral infrastructure topics, representing German interests in the G7 PGII working group, and contributing to the conceptual development of sustainable infrastructure initiatives. The intern will also assist in relevant multilateral and national processes, facilitate knowledge management within GIZ, and support the development of cross-sectoral concepts and funding approaches related to sustainable infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for supporting the GIZ team in advising the BMZ on sustainable infrastructure development, particularly in relation to processes under the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investments (PGII). Key tasks include: assisting in the preparation of documents such as reports, speeches, and presentations related to the political work of the BMZ; conducting background research and drafting position papers and other knowledge products on topics such as infrastructure development, private capital mobilization for infrastructure, sustainable finance, and blended finance; evaluating activities of World Bank facilities like the Global Infrastructure Facility and the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility; preparing internal and external exchange formats and meetings on sustainable infrastructure development and private capital mobilization; and regularly compiling knowledge products for the BMZ to promote knowledge exchange and inform about new developments in the field of sustainable infrastructure.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have recently completed a degree in economics, social sciences, political science, or a related field, ideally with a focus on infrastructure, sustainable economic development, sustainable finance, or development economics. They should possess initial study or work experience and relevant expertise in infrastructure, private capital mobilization, sustainable/green finance, or international political processes. Knowledge of the mechanisms and procedures of international cooperation, particularly in the context of G7/G20 or multilateral development banks like the World Bank Group, is essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate structured, results-oriented, and conscientious work habits, along with a passion for conceptual work and the ability to quickly grasp new topics and contexts to develop innovative concepts.
Educational Background: The position requires a completed degree in a relevant field such as economics, social sciences, or political science within the last six months. The degree should ideally relate to infrastructure, sustainable economic development, or similar areas.
Experience: Candidates should have initial experience, either through internships or relevant work, in areas related to infrastructure, private capital mobilization, or sustainable finance. Familiarity with international political processes is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in both German and English, both spoken and written, is mandatory. Strong communication skills are essential, along with proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
