Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is a government-owned enterprise that has been operational for over 50 years. Its mission is to support the global implementation of development policy goals. GIZ collaborates with partner organizations in 120 countries, engaging in a variety of projects aimed at improving lives and fostering sustainable development. The organization emphasizes meaningful tasks for its employees, aiming to create a better life for all through its initiatives.
Job Overview: The position of Praktikant*in in the Department of Rural Development and Agricultural Economics is part of the global project 'Sustainability and Value Creation in Agricultural Supply Chains'. This project is integral to the Special Initiative on the Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems (SI AGER) and focuses on promoting sustainability in selected agricultural supply chains. Key agricultural raw materials such as cotton, bananas, coffee, cocoa, natural rubber, palm oil, and soy are central to rural development in many developing and emerging countries. Agricultural supply chains are vital for the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. The project aims to achieve international development goals through collaboration with market-dominating actors at a global level, focusing on partnerships with globally operating companies, international traders, raw material suppliers, and international standard organizations. The project operates along the supply chain, working 'from the shelf to the field', and the coordination unit in Germany oversees implementation in various project countries while ensuring direct contact with clients and other partners.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Praktikant*in include supporting the coordination unit in Germany with the management of the project. This involves various tasks such as assisting in the day-to-day operations of the global project, providing organizational and technical support, and creating communication and public relations materials. The intern will also engage deeply in the area of climate mainstreaming within the project and contribute to the component 'Collaboration with the Economy' (ZmW) by conducting research, analyses, and evaluations related to these topics. The intern will be responsible for preparing information for different target groups and assisting in the coordination of raw material hubs (project countries) and global initiatives. Additionally, the intern will support reporting to the client and represent the project at events.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should be in an advanced stage of their studies or have completed their studies in fields such as agricultural sciences, economics (both micro and macro), political or social sciences, geography, or other relevant disciplines. They should possess current knowledge of issues related to climate change, supply chains, rural development, and agricultural economics, along with a strong interest in these areas. Proficiency in German is required, and good command of English is essential; knowledge of French and Spanish is considered an advantage. Familiarity with common data processing programs is expected, and prior internship or work experience in a developing or emerging country is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility, teamwork, organizational skills, and strong communication abilities, along with a high degree of intercultural competence, reliability, and thoroughness. They should be team-oriented while also being capable of working independently and in a structured manner.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes being currently enrolled in a degree program or being in a training program that necessitates completing an internship. Alternatively, candidates who have graduated within the last six months are also eligible to apply. Relevant fields of study include agricultural sciences, economics, political science, social sciences, geography, or similar areas that align with the responsibilities of the internship.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have some level of experience, ideally through internships or work in developing or emerging countries. This experience should relate to the fields of rural development, agricultural economics, or related areas, providing a practical understanding of the challenges and dynamics within these sectors.
Languages: Fluent German is mandatory, and good English language skills are required both in written and spoken forms. Knowledge of French and Spanish is advantageous but not essential. The ability to communicate effectively in these languages will enhance the candidate's ability to perform in the role, especially in a multicultural environment.
Additional Notes: The internship is full-time and is scheduled from June 9, 2025, to December 8, 202
The application deadline is May 2, 202
