Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), established in April 2012, has a membership of more than 150 Governments and aims to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services, responding to the needs of governments and other stakeholders.

Job Overview:
The consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the relevant IPBES bodies in preparing for the Plenary at IPBES 1
  • This includes contributing to the summaries for policymakers and chapters of the monitoring assessment and spatial planning and connectivity assessment. The consultant will also be responsible for proposing the nature, topics, and timing of IPBES deliverables related to assessing knowledge, building capacity, and strengthening the knowledge foundations to support policy. The position is home-based and is expected to last for 12 months on a part-time basis, with specific tasks outlined to ensure compliance with IPBES rules and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will undertake specific technical tasks related to the monitoring assessment and spatial planning and connectivity assessment. This includes reviewing drafts and materials, organizing review periods, managing data, and facilitating online and in-person meetings. The consultant will also prepare proposals for IPBES deliverables, including written inputs and analyses, and will organize and facilitate workshops as needed. Additionally, the consultant will liaise with secretariat staff and relevant technical support units and perform other duties as required, ensuring that all tasks align with IPBES protocols and deadlines.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental, natural social or interdisciplinary sciences, or a related field. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in natural, social or interdisciplinary sciences is required. This includes experience in planning, designing, managing, implementing, and evaluating projects. Candidates should demonstrate proven organizational and management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing circumstances. Experience in writing and editing reports for multiple stakeholders is also required, while relevant work experience with intergovernmental processes at the interface of science and policy is desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental, natural social or interdisciplinary sciences, or a related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to the IPBES deliverables and assessments.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in the fields of natural, social or interdisciplinary sciences. Candidates should have experience in project management, including planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating projects. Experience working in interdisciplinary teams and managing diverse approaches to achieve shared deliverables is also essential. Proven organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment are critical for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders involved in the IPBES processes.

The consultant will be engaged on a part-time basis for 5 months during a 12-month period.
