Job Overview:
The position of Praktikant*in in the consulting project for African policy of the BMZ, with a focus on energy and climate, involves supporting the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in the strategic development of German African policy. The intern will assist in monitoring current developments on the African continent and analyzing strategies and initiatives from African partners and other donors. A key aspect of this role is to help identify points of connection for German development cooperation, particularly in relation to multilateral processes. The intern will also support the BMZ in its positioning regarding Africa-related developments in European development cooperation, with a current emphasis on advising the BMZ on the strategic positioning and coherent design of the energy portfolio in Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for supporting the team in providing technical and process consulting to the BMZ for coherent policy-making in the areas of climate and energy in Africa. This includes analyzing agendas and initiatives from African, European, and multilateral partners in the climate and energy sectors. The intern will also assist in the conceptualization, preparation, and follow-up of BMZ appearances at international conferences, such as the Africa Climate Summit and COP3
  • Additional responsibilities include conducting research and producing evaluations, assessments, and briefing notes on selected African policy issues, as well as supporting day-to-day tasks and public relations and communication efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should be in an advanced stage of their studies in a relevant field such as economics, international relations, energy, and climate, or have graduated no more than six months prior to the internship. A good overview of the political and economic dynamics of the African continent, particularly regarding energy and climate issues, is essential. Candidates should possess knowledge of African positions in international politics and relevant international policy processes, with the ability to quickly grasp complex issues. Initial practical experience in German, European, or multilateral development cooperation with Africa is preferred, ideally through internships or volunteer services on the African continent. Excellent communication skills in both German and English, along with strong IT skills and experience in creating presentations, are required. Intercultural and social competence, teamwork orientation, and a structured, independent working style are also important.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes being currently enrolled in a relevant study program or having completed studies no more than six months prior to the start of the internship. The internship must be part of a training program or a requirement for graduation.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have initial practical experience in development cooperation, particularly in contexts related to Africa. This experience can be gained through internships, volunteer work, or other relevant engagements that provide insight into the workings of international development.

Languages:
Fluency in both German and English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is crucial for the role. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not explicitly required.
