Interns will gain practical experience and enhance their understanding of international labor issues by engaging directly with the ILO's work and applying its principles, programs, and strategies. Interns will be involved in various evaluation activities, including monitoring and reporting on evaluation outcomes, conducting desk reviews, and supporting high-level strategy evaluations. The internship is designed to provide exposure to the full range of evaluation work, including evaluation design, methodology development, data collection, and dissemination of findings. Interns will work closely with evaluation specialists and gain insights into the ILO's operations and the broader context of international development.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for supporting the Evaluation Office in various tasks, including:
Monitoring and reporting on evaluation activities and outcomes for the ILO through 2024-2
Conducting desk reviews and providing support for high-level strategy evaluations, thematic evaluations, and Decent Work Country Programme evaluations.
Engaging in meta-analysis and studies focused on quality, effectiveness of programs, and lessons learned.
Assisting in the development of evaluation knowledge management products and services, such as databases and newsletters.
Contributing to the improvement of ILO capacities and quality control for impact evaluation through the development of tools and guidelines.
Supporting the production, dissemination, and use of evaluation findings as part of knowledge management efforts.
Performing administrative tasks as needed, which may take up 10% to 20% of the intern's time.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet several qualifications to be considered for the internship. They should be enrolled in a Master's or Doctorate program or have completed such a program within the past year. A graduate or postgraduate degree in social sciences, economics, or public administration is preferred, particularly with coursework in evaluation or related research methodologies. Additionally, candidates should have experience in conducting research, analyzing socio-economic data, and possess strong writing and editing skills in English, along with proficiency in either French or Spanish. Familiarity with database management and evaluation methods is also required, as well as a command of Microsoft Excel and familiarity with data analysis software such as NVivo or SPSS.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in a Master's degree program or completion of such a program within the last year. Candidates should have a graduate or postgraduate degree in social sciences, economics, or public administration, ideally with coursework related to evaluation and applied research methodologies. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of evaluation work within the ILO.
Experience: Candidates should have experience in conducting research and academic coursework in research methods. Documentable experience in analyzing socio-economic data is essential, as well as good writing and editing skills in English and either French or Spanish. Experience in developing and managing databases, knowledge of evaluation methods, and familiarity with the development program/project cycle are also important. Work experience in international development, particularly at the country level, is considered an asset. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are necessary for success in this role.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, along with a working knowledge of either French or Spanish. This language requirement is essential for effective communication within the ILO's multicultural and multilingual environment.
Additional Notes: The internship contract will last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of a given month. Interns will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month, with additional contributions towards medical insurance. Candidates from non- or under-represented countries may be eligible for financial assistance for round-trip airfare to Geneva.
