Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among diverse professionals.

Job Overview:
The Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) at CERN is responsible for the electrical power-distribution network, fibre-optics infrastructure, and signal and DC-power cabling for the accelerator complex. The role of Electrical Designer within the Electrical Design and Documentation Office (EN-EL-DDO) involves working under the guidance of senior design managers on strategic projects, including the electrical renovation project of the AWAKE accelerator and electrical substation consolidation projects. The position requires the design of low voltage distribution networks, equipment sizing, protection studies, and lighting studies, with the aim of gradually taking on projects of increasing complexity. The successful candidate will be expected to have foundational knowledge in electrical distribution circuit design and will prepare calculation notes, design drawings, and bills of material for electrical-related equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Electrical Designer include designing electrical distribution circuits, preparing calculation notes, conducting lighting and earthing studies, and creating design drawings related to single line diagrams. The designer will also be responsible for preparing bills of material for electrical-related equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations. The role may involve collaboration with other engineering teams and participation in project meetings to discuss design progress and challenges. Additionally, the designer will be expected to contribute to the documentation of design processes and maintain accurate records of design changes and decisions made throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a professional background in Electrical Engineering or a related field. They should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is essential that candidates have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Proven hands-on experience in the design of low voltage distribution networks, including LV calculation notes, equipment dimensioning, selectivity studies, and protection, is required. Familiarity with low voltage design calculation tools such as ElecCalc or Caneco is also necessary.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or a PhD in the same area. The educational background should include comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering principles, particularly in the context of low voltage distribution networks and power systems. Candidates should have a solid understanding of electrical standards and safety regulations relevant to the field.

Experience:
Candidates should have proven hands-on experience in the design of low voltage distribution networks, with a focus on LV calculation notes, equipment dimensioning, selectivity studies, and protection. Experience with low voltage design calculation tools is essential, and familiarity with designing medium-voltage electrical distribution networks is considered beneficial. The ideal candidate will have a track record of successfully completing projects in a timely manner and will be comfortable working in a collaborative environment.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse teams at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The job is fully onsite, and the target start date is 01-March-202
  • The position involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license. The job reference for this position is EN-EL-DDO-2025-258-GRAP. The compensation includes a monthly stipend between 6287-6911 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, there is a relocation package available, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
